Ordering for the 2021 Hess Truck airplane just opened at 10 AM EST. The website is getting hit hard but I was able to place an order after 15 minutes. Good luck!
Relatively high quality for the price; nostalgia for a throwback time when the people buying these were kids themselves and weren't aware of current events and how much the world sucked; memories of a "better time" before video games became as awesome as they are now.
They also come with batteries so you avoid the dreaded holiday "Batteries not included" scenario.
How has quality changed over the years? I remember the late 2000s hess trucks being pretty solid.
My brother got them every year growing up and my kids have gotten them for the last 16+ years from grandparents. They are still just as solid and well built, IMO.$40 is getting up there a bit for the price, but the quality is still there.
They used to be collectible, but at this point it's one of those things where because of that reputation, people are just buying them to be "collectible" which inherently makes them not-so-collectible (way too many of these will be unopened new-in-box in 40 years so there won't be any scarcity).
That said, if you're a longtime collector, you probably also don't want to miss a year. They are high quality toys that are recognizable at first glance, not just a generic "truck". Buying on a website is a very different experience from back in the day though, you used to get them at the actual gas station. Sometimes they'd go out of stock pretty quickly and it was a little bit of luck of the draw. You couldn't exactly wait until December 20th and expect to find one. The website now exists solely to sell this one item for a few weeks of the year.

I agree that the older trucks were built like tanks! I used to get one every year for Christmas and now my son plays with them, so they've been through the ringer!
Not sure if the newer trucks will last as long, but the quality is still higher than other cheap toys that break a month after Christmas!

Can confirm; the newer trucks are sturdy. Simply LEDs and sounds, but strong plastic. My son is two and regularly knocks them off of shelves onto tile/hardwood floor. We haven't even had a piece break off. My dad regularly buys these for the kids and they are always a hit.

Yea they should've known this would happen!
I tried placing my order from 10 AM. I never saw a successful order screen but I did receive an email at about 15 or 20 minutes later.

P.S: That website needs some serious overhaul.
