this is arguably slightly more effort than having a step-on trash can, i can attest to that since i've used both

also, this can takes much more work when replacing the trash bag. in a step-on can, you prop up the lid, and pull out the bag. in this can however, you completely pull out the top, then pull out the ring that sits between the top and the main body of the trash can, and THEN get the trash bag out. and then once you replace the bag, you have to put the ring and the top back in place.... overall much more work than one might imagine

but i will still prefer this can, because it's just so much cooler!
Those 5000mAh lipstick USB batteries will fit in there, just need to slice a USB cable into the battery terminals. One charge can last 1-2 weeks.

Don't use it for the kitchen, as soon as you wash it, all the gears will rust and the circuit board will die eventually. I tried, even took out the circuit board and sprayed a few layers of PlastiDip to waterproof it before hand, died a year in. Still nice using it manually. I'm currently in the process of building an external auto-opener with either Arduino or Pi Zero with proximity sensors and a motor, the idea is to hook a string to lift/lower the lid. That way, I can still wash the lid every bag change as I'm doing now.

I got this 3 months ago. The motor has already stopped closing the lid. My last one lasted 6 years before failing. This thing is trash.

Not sure why you had so much problem with yours. I use this thrash can in the kitchen next to the sink. It would get junk on it once in a while or liquids but I just wipe it down and it's as good as new. The D batteries are fine. Haven't replaced it in months and it's constantly being used. The only area of concern I would say is that it dents easily but not a big deal for me.
Maybe it's the food that we process? Maybe the way we throw away leftover? I don't dump food down the drain/sink. Pieces of pizza, meat, fruit, ... staying in the trash can just a day or two will stink the lid, their vapor sticks to the inside and underside that would require washing with dish soap and even some rubbing to get the dried pieces off.

I paid $12 for a black one last time, saw ppl paid $10. Mine is placed at the entrance of the kitchen and I have to walk by closely, A piece of electrical tape covering 1/2 to 2/3 of the sensor does the trick.

I'll give that a try thanks!!

1-2 weeks?? I've been using mine with regular alkaline batteries for months and haven't had to change any of them yet.

I have this thrash can and it's the best! I don't know about that ring you mentioned. Mine didn't come with it but I don't think you need it. I just put your average kitchen bags from Sam's or Costco and it's a perfect fit. Wrap it around the lip and put the cover back on. Haven't changed the D batteries for months. This beats those more expensive ones and it looks just as good but just be careful it's easy to dent.

Yours may have came with it and you just haven't realized it. A surprising number of people don't realize what they're for so they don't even take them out when putting the bags in. They aren't necessary to function but it looks much cleaner when the ring is used.

I bought this about 10 months ago and it lasted for about 6 months before my kids broke the lid. All the lid parts are plastic, even the hinge. I had to buy a more durable step lid as a replacement.

note that a D battery is about 12,000-18,000mAh, two of them would be at least 20,000mAh, whereas a lipstick USB is only 5,000mAh. Also, depending on your usage, mine is pretty sensitive and it sits where we walk in front of it frequently, and my wife cooks a lot, so about 40-80 flips/day is typical.

I've had this for over a year. I really like it.

And I still haven't had to replace the batteries even once, and I probably open it 5 to 10 times per day

that's great. what brand of batteries did you use?

Lol, so I finally took a closer inspection and looked at the instructions at the bottom of the can and it does show a ring but mine didn't come with it. I bought it already out and not packaged at the Walmart store so the Walmart employees "ain't got no time for that!" Lol 🤣😆 they probably assembled it and threw the ring out with the box. To be honest though, if you put a 40 gal. Kitchen trash bag it fits perfectly and no ring is needed it fills up nicely without the bag getting undone.
