"Brushless" motors are a major selling point. If they aren't proudly bragging about the tool being brushless, it won't have the extra contacts and won't be able to take advantage of the extra amperage from high performance batteries.
No. Tools with brushed motors aren't designed to pull the extra amperage even if you give them a battery that can supply it.
It is brushless and HP no extra contacts. I thought the HP brushless had them, that's all.

I like the 3's in things like reciprocating saws, and then the 4's are obviously vastly preferred for yard tools.

They're doing this deliberately and the bottom line is they may make improvements, but it's more so to increase profits, pure and simple.
The regular 18v One+ batteries use 18650 cells, and guess what? The new HP batteries also use 18650 cells.
Did they optimize their discharge efficiency? Who knows, but that would be in the tool, not the battery cells..
I called Ryobi and got a bunch of gobbledygook. If you have NEW brush-less tools with the two NEW contacts, decide what you want to buy and buy it. There's no comparison chart or coherent explanation of the differences.. It's pure, 100% intentional, obfuscation intended to overwhelm people with bullshit.
Edit: there is one advantage to HP which I went with. I don't know how long the old batches have sat on the shelves and there is a chance those batteries were on shelf way too long to not hold a charge.i bought HP not bc I think they are better but bc I wanted batteries that I know I will personally keep charging to ensure they are maintained properly. Old stocks of batteries may not hold charge which is the risk we take.
Also I went for 6ah which only comes as HP.
