ATARI is one of the most recognized names in the world. Since its formation in 1972, the company pioneered hundreds of iconic titles including Asteroids, Centipede and Missile Command. In addition to hundreds of games created for arcades, home video systems, and computers, original artwork was specially commissioned to enhance the Atari experience, further enticing children and adults to embrace and enjoy the new era of electronic entertainment. ART OF ATARI is the first official collection of such artwork. Sourced from museums and private collections worldwide, this book spans over 40 years of the company's unique illustrations used in packaging, advertisements, catalogs, and more! ART OF ATARI includes behind-the-scenes details on how dozens of games featured within were conceived of, illustrated, approved (or rejected), and brought to life. Whether you're a fan, collector, enthusiast, or new to the world of video games, this book offers the most complete collection of ATARI artwork ever produced! Includes a special Foreword by New York Times bestseller Ernest Cline, author of Armada and Ready Player One, soon to be a motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg: "For me, revisiting the beautiful artwork presented in this book is almost as good as taking a trip in Doc Brown's time machine back to that halcyon era at the dawn of the digital age. But be warned, viewing these images may leave you with an overwhelming desire to revisit the ancient pixelated battlefields they each depict as well." -- from the Foreword by Ernest Cline. "Having worked in the entertainment field as a consultant in Pop Culture, I have seen with my own eyes the destruction of original assets in favor of digital conversions to save corporations time and money on long-term storage. Therefore, I naturally assumed the original Atari artwork fell prey to similar disposal or theft or had simply been forgotten about all together. Thanks to ART OF ATARI, not any more!" -- from the Afterword by Robert V. Conte.

This is a great book, I have the hard copy.

A year ago I searched one of the artists that did a bunch of Atari art in this book. He's still alive (not a given). He was so happy a fan reached out he sent me a free autographed print of a famous Atari art piece he did. I now have a small piece of history.
Atari was SUCH a pity.

In the early 90s they had the TT030 graphics work station that far outstripped anything Apple had. Both Apple and Windows adopted many of the features of the Atari graphical interface.

The TOS (Tramiel Operating System) was on PROM chips so it loaded virtually immediately, took up almost no memory overhead, and could not be hacked. Upgrading the TOS just involved R&R of the PROM chips and the computers were designed to make that easy.

They had the STacy laptop, the little handheld device that was featured in "Terminator 2", and they were working on handwriting recognition.

Sadly, the Tramiels who owned Atari were concerned only with whether or not they each had a new Mercedes in their driveway every year and ran it into the ground through mismanagement.

I had a bit more insight because at the time I was working to launch my "Space/Fantasy/Adventure Network" with Atari's participation in providing the computers. But I did not understand that Hollywood does not care what you are doing, but instead what lies you can tell so the concept was stolen from me and launched as the "SciFi Channel."

Never could understand how the WWE was "SciFi."

The project allowed me to start a 30 year friendship with Walter Koenig (STTOS "Chekov") and even a friendship with Dr. Arthur C. Clarke ("2001" author), so all was not lost.

Thanks for this! I've had this on my wish list for a while. I was afraid the kindle version of a coffee table book would be disappointing, but I'm really enjoying the "I TOTALLY remember that!" feeling with this version.

I purchased the hardcover version a few years ago for ~$20. I may just get the Kindle version so that I can keep the hardcover book in pristine condition.

Thanks op, love the art and detailed history of Atari systems. BTW the 2nd book is really just a repeat of art contained in the first book without background on artists/games/history. I would stick with just the first for $1.

Images from my childhood. If you get a chance to see it in print (like at my local library I did) it's a nice nostalgic trip.

Got Art of Atari and Posters of Atari both free. When making another purchase, selected Amazon Day for delivery and received a $2 digital goods credit. Sweet.
