A year ago I searched one of the artists that did a bunch of Atari art in this book. He's still alive (not a given). He was so happy a fan reached out he sent me a free autographed print of a famous Atari art piece he did. I now have a small piece of history.
In the early 90s they had the TT030 graphics work station that far outstripped anything Apple had. Both Apple and Windows adopted many of the features of the Atari graphical interface.
The TOS (Tramiel Operating System) was on PROM chips so it loaded virtually immediately, took up almost no memory overhead, and could not be hacked. Upgrading the TOS just involved R&R of the PROM chips and the computers were designed to make that easy.
They had the STacy laptop, the little handheld device that was featured in "Terminator 2", and they were working on handwriting recognition.
Sadly, the Tramiels who owned Atari were concerned only with whether or not they each had a new Mercedes in their driveway every year and ran it into the ground through mismanagement.
I had a bit more insight because at the time I was working to launch my "Space/Fantasy/Adventure Network" with Atari's participation in providing the computers. But I did not understand that Hollywood does not care what you are doing, but instead what lies you can tell so the concept was stolen from me and launched as the "SciFi Channel."
Never could understand how the WWE was "SciFi."
The project allowed me to start a 30 year friendship with Walter Koenig (STTOS "Chekov") and even a friendship with Dr. Arthur C. Clarke ("2001" author), so all was not lost.
