my 8500 HS was put to the test this year, bft, yft, blue shark, sun fish, all range from 80-300 lbs with no problem , drag was really smooth, i was amaze how well it performed and nothing broken, especially fighting bluefin tuna w/ bad drag is really easily breaking line, but we had 0 line broke.

Would I be able to use this setup to catch some yellows and bonitos? I want to put on some 30 lb line and cast from a boat

I hate Penn rods. Love their reels. Rods always break or fall apart even with careful attention to maintenance. My fav jigging rod is a Shimano Trevala.

Yes, this is exactly why I originally got the 6500 but when I was using it out on a jetty or the canal, I couldn't get used to it. That's just me. Maybe on a boat, it might be easier to be mindful to close the bail before reeling, but I never fish from a boat so idk.
Or if you're letting the bait sink first like jigs or high low rigs where there's a pause. But again, mine has never prematurely tripped on me that I can remember. I lose more lures from snagged wind knots on the rod than anything else.
Thanks for the link, makes me wonder if there's a way to improve or perhaps tighten the feature instead of removing it completely.
I used to get a lot of wind knots. Ironically enough, I started closing the bail manually and it solved that problem.

(update) After finding the Penn slammer III and David BG deal but holding my breath, I finally pulled the trigger for Penn Conflict II 4000 for 69.98 from DSG. However, It's the last one, and OOS after my order now... (I was hoping to post this deal as well but OOS means nothing now...)

Thanks guys for a lot of great exp sharing, wish you a great and healthy 2022 year ahead, and Merry (early) Xmas!

(btw, 4500 slammer III is back in stock and Cabela still has it in stock as well https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/p...cm_soc=AFF)
