I have had luck getting free shipping when I add stuff to my cart and just checking periodically till it says I have a set amount of time to check out for free shipping, definitely ymmv. I am not paying for membership.

Do a 14 day trial, go on the tmobile Tuesday thread and ask for a 2 month trial code, or if you have a chase card they are giving a membership till April.
