I've heard from rust belt mechanics that it causes more harm than good
I use this with great success for waterproofing outdoor low voltage landscape wiring connections.
I would not use this under the body of your vehicle. If you're looking into some underbody rust prevention, I would suggest something like Fluid Film.

This crap lasts about 2 months on a surface before it dries and flakes off. That is the same for any of the spray undercoatings. In order to get it to spray out of a nozzle, it is thin and aerated to the point where all you have is a porous coating. Its only use is to cover the rust on a car while you try to sell it. If it were free, I would not use it.

Can I cover hood rust or only the underbelly?

Got a gallon of this stuff just waiting for my new truck to come in to use it on. Read/seen a lot of great things about FF, can't wait to try it!
Just did my first application on my new truck. Get the custom sprayer. I thought I could use a paint sprayer and it atomized more product than it got on the truck.
Also, heat it up first before each application.
It stinks for a while...like a month. Take care to not get much on you exhaust or it will smoke a lot.

I live in Chicago. I use Woolwax for auto rust protection instead.

The only thing you should be using this type of product for is coating your wheel wells to reduce noise when driving on gravel.

If you ever see a product like this sprayed on a frame, axle, etc., run away as fast as you can. Someone is trying to conceal rust damage.

I heard the trick was to make sure you prime first then spray the rubber application to the other side and it won't cause any further issues if you just spray it without priming then you're trapping moisture or taking a chance to
That's not really a trick, it IS the way Smilie

For any coating to protect metal, it has to be able to stick to it and be the barrier between the metal and the air/water. The longer a product stays connected directly to the metal, the better. This applies to paint, rust convertor, and things like fluid film, lanolins or petroleum oils people use. They all have the same exact purpose and function and work the same way.

If that barrier breaks down and the metal is exposed and the rust returns.
Smooth clean well prepped surfaces are good candidates for paints. Dirty, rough, chipping, not good surfaces are ideal for oil based rust prevention. It would take a LOT of work and in most cases near impossible to properly prep a car body and frame areas good enough for long term paint adhesion. I've done paint on large areas of unibodies where very little is hidden and used paint but you can't get into nooks and crannies and inside boxed areas or crimped layers with paint. Think a modern boxed or stamped layered crimped control arm. There is no way you can "prep" the inside of that control arm for paint. Same goes for an already rusting crimp area like under the doors. It's almost impossible to paint the inner bottom of a door or a tailgate and those are open and routinely get water in them by design (make sure to keep your door drain holes clear).

Paints disadvantage is when sprayed on poorly prep'd areas or places it should not have been used, it can separate from the metal in a short amount of time exposing a small portion to the elements. Since paint can also stick to itself it can then create small hiding spots for water to collect between it and the metal trapping more moisture for longer periods of time than if there was no paint at all. Non curing rust preventatives unlike paint does not "harden" and can spread thinner and "absorb" into the areas and does not create those shelves and tunnels for water to hide.

That being said. This is a good price. Paint and undercoating should be one of the things in your decision tree for protecting metal but not the only one.

What is the purpose of applying any coat to the underbody of a newer vehicle to prevent rust when the manufacturer does this for free? The dealerships like to make extra bucks on reselling it as an addition but manufacturers already does it for free.

DO NOT use this stuff, it'll echo what everyone says, this will absolutely destroy a vehicle from the inside out. This is the only thing I will put on any vehicle. https://www.amazon.com/woolwax-La...536&sr=8-6
Apply once a year in the fall and you'll vehicle will not rust out.

Correct, it might trap moisture between the metal and the rubber which speed up the rusting. But this is a good deal. Buying 2 for DIY projects.
Oh it will, just a matter of time. The road salt will get through the undercoating and accelerate the rust. Just coat the metal in an oil instead, there's various products for it.

I agree, any dealer added thing on a car is 100% hustle and should be avoided but cars do not come with additional undercoating protection from the factory. They have factory paint. Better metals, different methods, and better paints are always being utilized but additional protection is needed depending on where you live. Watch a few videos from the SouthMainAuto channel on youtube for how good that "factory" protection really is.

A larger than necessary wire nut packed with cheap wheel bearing grease and then wrapped with electrical tape (just to secure it) will last forever too.

People are big fans of the lanolin-based coatings. They work really well. I didn't want something I would have to re-apply, and went the cosmoline route. It's working great so far; leaves a firm waxy coating that looks good and seals well.

Agreed on the warming it up first, it really helps spray more evenly, as well as penetrating the tighter spaces in the chassis. I put the gallon container in front of my garage heater between refilling the sprayer, which seemed to do the trick.

I bought the recommended sprayer from amazon, the cheap $30 one with two hoses. It all worked out really well, and wasn't nearly as much work as I thought it would be.

Mask, goggles, gloves, ramps, ear plugs, and a hoodie you don't need to wear in public again.

Cosmoline is really bad for you.

Just chiming in. I was hesitant to use this stuff on my truck frame and did an experiment with the underside of a lawnmower deck first. Lots of prep and 2 to 3 coats. Looked great. Problem one: it doesn't dry smoothly. Any wet grass got stuck to the deck. Problem two: rocks/pebbles and fallen tree branches (small) left bb sized puncture wounds on the coating. Rust not only formed, but even worked its way through the factory coating on top.
If I wouldn't use it in a lawnmower I didn't care about, sure wouldn't put it on a truck.
