It does not work in the dark although it has a light in the front. The light is used strictly for obstacle avoidance only.
Short version: If you have some low carpets and your home is 1100+ sq ft big, you'll appreciate the purchase.
Pros:
1) It's quiet sometimes. Sometimes the J7 isn't vacuuming and just moving to a destination, and during these moments it's a lot quieter than the I3.
2) It vacuums my home in half the time. The i3 needed an extra 20min to vacuum, but this extra 20min meant it needed to charge before vacuuming again. The charging would double the vacuum time as a result.
3) Self-emptying is a godsend. While vacuuming, it always needed to be emptied, which meant I had to go to it every time so that it could finish.
4) The avoidance system works perfectly for my home. There were some things that would always result in the Roomba getting stuck on, and this newer one handles it perfectly.

Coming from a Roborock S4 to this, it cleans carpet much better and actually fits under our couch. Still, the biggest difference is navigation: Any new obstacles and it really takes a lot of effort to navigate without lidar. No live mapping progress, either. Overall their vacuuming algorithm (seems like center out, without a full perimeter) isn't nearly as comprehensive as Roborock's perimeter-first, then interior vacuuming plan.
We really like it for pet fur, and the learning feature is nice, but the location accuracy and several other navigation features are inferior. Still pros and cons of each
New to the robot vacuums, but I've not been very impressed with a Roomba 694 we're trying out. Not sure if changing manufacturers or upgrading to a higher model is a better choice.
Personally prefer vac and mop. Have S7+ and hardwood floors. With Bona - house looks cleaner
Very happy with their performance. Especially after discovering could vac one room while M6 was mopping another room.

My J7+ is OK but the dock is loud, it still uses its bump sensor a lot, and the obstacle avoidance supposedly should improve with updates but it is far from perfect now. It's unable to get some pet hair out of our area rug. The future seems to be lidar with obstacle avoidance so you have to manage your expectations since this only has obstacle avoidance.
