Hasn't this method been around for a pretty long while now?

Yes, and TBH I'm surprised Slickdeals permits it to be advertised as it's legality is at best questionable.

I'm no narc though....

Pretty sure it's not illegal. Companies hate it, sure, but there's no law that prevents you from buying digital goods from any country you want

I'm not so sure about that.

If that were the case, buying the rights to broadcast something in a given region would be meaningless. Why would Showtime buy the rights to an expensive PPV boxing event if you could VPN to another country and pay pennies for the same event? Same with ESPN and UFC events, or any number of popular overseas sports (i.e.- soccer or cricket). They're ALL cheaper in other countries than from whatever entity owns the rights in the US.

It really just comes down to: Is Microsoft giving people a hard time over this? The answer right now appears to be no, but that may not be the case forever.

What he's saying is there's no criminal law. It's not illegal. The government isn't throwing you in jail for it.

But is it against the terms of service? Definitely! Could microsoft sue you? Yep! Doesn't mean they're going to.

But if you're Showtime, etc., you're definitely getting sued lol

You're comparing apples and oranges. There's nothing illegal about this and I have NEVER seen a ban report in all the years this "loophole" has been done, and believe me, it's been a lot of years! Microsoft wants people in their ecosystem, and it's not worth their time fighting with a user that saved $15 on a year of Gold, then likely converted that to Ultimate Game Pass on top of it.

Microsoft not caring and this being "kosher" (if you really hate 'illegal' that much) are two entirely different things. Microsoft clearly cares, as you now need a VPN whereas you didn't used to. They just don't care enough to sue.

Either way, my point was that I am surprised that SD permits posting this kind of a "deal". There are a great many "deals" that can be had with simple use of a VPN, for what's ultimately regular price in other places. I didn't think they endorsed circumventing the TOS.

You've been on SD since 2005, that must be a mistake because this post screams "rookie" to me. This deal (in some incarnation) has been around for years, and yes you've needed a VPN for past deals too, stop talking out your ass like you're familiar with the subject matter, because clearly you aren't.

Here's one example from 4 years ago: https://slickdeals.net/e/11318819-12-months-xbox-live-gold-subscription-no-payment-fee-41-90?v=1

Brazil Gold code, needed a VPN back then, too. It's literally nothing new. And 0 ban reports since then due to it.

lmao, ok kid, whatever you say. Because everyone knows Xbox Live started 4 years ago.

Many moons ago, there was ZERO restriction on live codes. If you found a way to get one from Timbuktu, you entered the code, and it just.... worked. MS caught on, and they started linking it to currency and region. But people got around it by changing the settings on their XBox. You temp change it to the region and/or currency that was local to the code you bought, and voila, it worked. You could also go to that countries version of the MS website and activate it there. Eventually they figured out to check the region you're ACTUALLY connecting through, but of course use of a VPN is a way around that too. They are constantly trying to find a way to keep people from unfairly using other regions' codes, which would indicate that they do, in fact, care.

They have not sued or banned anybody, I said that from jump. None of that makes this "ok" necessarily, and none of that means they aren't going to keep trying to stop you from doing this or find a way to catch you.
