The answer always is anything but Netgear consumer mesh system. Read their forums.

I love Netgear and I think they are the best consumer grade networking products company by far.

But they dropped the ball big time in Orbis firmware updates and asinine support, or lack thereof.

Seriously, read their forums. Thank me later. Rep me now.
Only buy dual band mesh if your house is wired for ethernet already. Otherwise buy a tri-band mesh.
This is only a dual-band system, where the Orbi at Costco is tri-band. Plus the easy returns at Costco if it doesn't work out for you.

I have the Linksys MX8400C from Costco and while it started out great, firmware updates seem to cause more problems than they fix, so I'm hesitant to recommend Linksys. That said, plenty of people complain about Orbi too.

Agree with one exception... I'm waiting for WiFi 9.2F+

Has anyone done the research to see if these are supported by one of the better Linux-based open-source firmware options like DDWRT, OpenWRT, or ClearOS or even Unix-based such as pfSense? Otherwise, does anyone have knowledge of any exploits to obtain root on these?

TIA

You're very smart. Thank you for letting me know. I will definitely buy a 6E router so that in 3 years with devices support it, I'll be all set! Just like you, I have a hundred live devices on my network at a time and need the wider pipeline because facts, that's why.

Amazing how uneducated people here are when it comes to triband and dual band. The average US household last I checked averaged around 125Mbps internet. The standard dualband mesh system from the furthest satilite from a good brand can push around 400Mbps, which well exceeds any average home requirements. At the routers they still get around 800Mbps though which is enough even for the top 10% of home users who are on over 500Mbps ISP packages. Yes if your getting fiber at your house and want to maximize the full 1Gbps you want something better but even 90% of all triband will not come close as they max out between 800-900Mbps. Thats with the exception of two current wifi 6 mesh systems the TP-LINK AX5700 and the bigger brother with the extra antenna the X90 they both wirelessly can push around 1.4Gbps no backhaul needed and yes they are triband. Outside of that only one wifi 6E mesh currently can push that. There are some stand a lone routers that can do that also.

This router mesh set for this price is a pass, its extremely slow no matter how you hook it up, one of the slowest of all the mesh kits out there currently. There are better alternatives, like the TP-LINK Triband X68 if you want a 3 pack or like I mentioned earlier the AX5700 from the same brand but a 2 pack.

Also a lot of people who dont know anything about Wifi6E here most of the time when your getting a new wifi 6E router you will be using WIFI 6 and not 6E unless your always in the same room as your router. The frequency is extremely short and does not do well with walls or obstructions, so Wifi 6E is a bust for almost everyone that does not sit right next to their router or is always in the same room. Not even the Wifi 6E mesh kits that currently came out use the 6E for backhaul cause its just not possible so they revert to Wifi 6.

So please enough with the Wifi 6E cause too many of you are way uneducated about it.

Hello. It seems like you know a lot about wireless routers. I have a 1.2 gb Comcast connection and want to get the best mesh system for my house. I currently have a Velop triband mesh setup and it seems to lose connection a lot. Any recommendations? I don't want to do wireless backhaul. Thanks a lot!

If you are not doing wireless go with the Costco TP-Link AX5700 2pack when they are on sale for $290/280 which happens regularly. As I mentioned over wireless to another client they will push around 1.4Gbps which completely maxs out your ISP connection when using the 2.5Gbps port. Only downside of the TP-LINK its a set it and forget it mesh which for a lot of people is actually a plus, but that means you cant tinker or make network adjustments that some people like to toy with.

If you want a greater degree of control and still able to use your full 1.2Gbps connection your next option would be to go with a standalone router the Asus RT-AX86U and you would have to get 2 of them and setup their AiMesh with wired backhaul if one single router is not enough to cover your home, to be clear you would be paying up the nose for the ability to tinker which 99% of users never have to do if you end up getting two of them. The RT-AX86U on the high side hits about 1250Mbps and on the low side around 1050 Mbps so it would be pretty close to maxing out your 1.2Gbps, your next options would increase costs by almost double so going to stop here.

I have an older Linksys Mesh System (linksys-velop-ac2200-tri-band-mesh-wi-fi-5-system-3-pack-black/6209705). I upgraded from Apple AirPort Extreme over a year ago. I purchased mine at Best Buy. Paid $200 around Black Friday. No regrets. My system is tri band . This one is only dual band . I'm not sure how important that is. I have never needed to reset or reboot my system . It's very reliable and very fast . I have fiber optic internet provider. My wifi speed is around 480 Mbps upload and download. Which is the speed of my fiber optic service.

Amazon price for a single AX5300 unit is $267. That suggests this is a Slick Deal as far as price . This is $330 for three units.

I agree that I like them, but I have found that they max out about 500mb up and down for me. I pay for 1g services. Still has not caused a device to freeze up due to low bandwidth with lots of simultaneous streaming.

I have the last gen velop. I found it to be garbage, constantly needing resets.

Then I did some debug and found that the routing was the issue, so I grabbed an ER-X and put the velop into bridge mode. Everything has been cake since then, these are great access points but terrible routers.

I also have an older version (linksys-velop-ac2200-tri-band-mesh-wi-fi-5-system-3-pack-black/6209705). I've never needed to reset or reboot it , but like you, I don't use it as my router. My router was supplied by my fiber optic internet provider . It's connected to two of my Linksys mesh stations by Ethernet cable . The third station (on my top floor) is wireless.

Before switching to fiber optic , I had cable internet supplier and used ARRIS SURFboard SBG7400AC2 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem & AC2350 Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router as my router. I connected it to the linksys mesh units same as above (two with Ethernet cable and one wireless) . Never had a problem with that set up either.

The wifi speed was totally dependent on my type of internet service . It was 100 mbps with cable internet and around 500 mbps with fiber optic. Speed is consistent no matter where I am in the house , which is a primary advantage of mesh system from what I understand.

Someone above said these Linksys mesh stations max out at 500 mpbs. I only pay for 500 mpbs, so I can't comment . However , I wonder whether the lower speed could be related to the ISP? Or possibly, should you be using a separate router and just use the Linksys mesh units for Wifi?

Thanks so much for the thoughtful and thorough response! I'll definitely go the TP-Link route as I don't want to have to tinker too much. Do they have a 3-node setup instead of the two with the same specs? My house doesn't seem to do well with two even though it's only 2,000 sq ft. The walls seem to cause issues. Thanks so much!!

No both the AX5700 and the X90 (one extra antenna) only come with 2packs and 1 packs. They are pretty powerful though so for a lot 2 is enough to cover a large home without a problem when positioned properly. You can also buy another 2 pack if you really need 3 of them and sell the 4th unit to someone for probably half the cost if not a little more of the 2 packs cause people are always looking for additional mesh units.

^^ This. Featured product is dual band by the way. But still a good deal for those who fit the use case.

I love my ac 2200 and have 5 of them linked for coverage across our farm. On rare occasions one will need a reset after a long power outage but that's it. Went though three other brands before settling on the velop. No need for anything more.

I have the Velop setup as well. Mine has not been as reliable as yours, requiring not just reboots but resets and re-setups UNTIL I stopped using them as the router and set them as APs in bridged mode and went back to using an older Asus AC1900 as the router. Since then it's been rock solid. I can mow 3 acres and stream music in every far corner.
exactly the same experience for me! I put a TP-Link ER605 in front of the Velop system and regained stability. Unbelievable for the price we paid for the Velop system!! I will not be upgrading to the Wifi6 version that's for sure.

I have an older Linksys mesh system. I use the router provided by my fiber optic supplier (sorry , not Fios). Set up works great. However , some people claim the Linksys mesh system may not give you full speed of fiber optic internet if your plan is higher than 500 mpgs. Also . since this mesh system is dual band , some have claimed that you should avoid unless you have up to date Ethernet cable (versus wifi) connection for each mesh station.
