I have this model. Never used it the first year I had it, as I was waiting to get an Xbox Series X and to get the 2.1 board replacement. I was able to get it repaired December last year. If you fill in the form on the Yamaha website, someone from United Radio will reach out to you. I received an email in about 48 hours. It asked me to confirm a few things, then they sent me a UPS label to ship it back. I had the original box, so I shipped it in that. If you don't have materials/box, I think they can provide for you.

Shipping was to Salt Lake City, Utah. From Buffalo it took about six days out. The unit was repaired and sent back to me the same day it was delivered. United Radio asked me a few questions before doing the repair, but it was a quick and painless process. It was another six days shipping to get back to me. Everything worked/works great with my XSX. Zero issues on my end with it plugged into my 7.1 system and my Sony X900H. I mean, the sound might take a few seconds to kick in when I start up my XSX from sleep, but that's about the only glitch I've noticed (if it even is one... it's so minor I don't care).

I don't know that there's a way to tell from the serial number if it has been fixed already, but I do know that when you load it up, if you use the display to show the firmware version, if there is a * by it, the repair has been done. United Radio did flash the latest firmware on it before sending back. I had no settings to backup (still fresh from factory), but they would have backed up and restored settings, too, if needed.

It was about as smooth as you could hope, and considering I was about as far away from Utah as you could get during the holiday rush, shipping time was more than reasonable. If you're closer you'll probably get it turned around even quicker, I imagine.

I'm not an audiophile. I replaced an older Yamaha system I had that couldn't do 4K and it works pretty much the same. I don't need to tweak things, it just needs to work, and it does for me. I hear the app is far more useful in setting things up than the on screen menus (which are slow and clunky), but I haven't bothered syncing my unit to my network, because if I ever need to update the firmware, I'll just use a USB.

I also only paid $320 for it in 2020 (which included a 5% non-member fee). I'd do it again for sure, because the price was more than worth it. Are there better units? Probably. But for the price I got it at and for my use case, I think it's worth it. I'd probably find it worth it at $440, too, but again, there may be "better" units at that price now, I don't know.

Last note: if you do need to ship it in for the repair, take everything out (e.g., remote). Make sure to take off the wireless antenna, too. I didn't realize they came off, so they asked me about them and they took them off and shipped it back. I'm not sure why they thought I might not want them back, but.. whatever. They came back and all is well.

Warning for gamers who want the best: Just a reminder this unit's HDMI 2.1 bandwidth is capped at 24gbps, which is half of HDMI 2.1's full bandwidth.

The PS5 currently tops out at 32gbps when displaying 4k/120 HDR 4:2:2
The Xbox Series X tops out at 40gbps when displaying 4k/120 HDR 4:4:4

The Yamaha will not be able to handle the top bandwidth of these new consoles, each console will however downsample the chroma to 4:2:0 at 4k/120 HDR, so you will get 4k/120 in HDR with this box. Downsampling chroma is generally unnoticeable, but where it does make a difference is in background detail, where the downsampled video will have more blur and look softer. So if you have a fancy OLED and just bought a new console and want the best picture quality available, this receiver will be a weak link and you'll be getting a (slightly) worse picture than what the new systems are capable of outputting. Example of chroma subsampling from wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wiki...orcomp.jpg

To get the best picture you should at least be looking for a 40gbps receiver.

That Sony in fact does not have 145W because it is 145W at 6 ohms.

You want to look at wattage at 8 ohms.
It is pathetic 67W at 8 ohms for that Sony STR-DH790.

Beware of manufacturers advertising wattage values at 6 ohms.
Run when you see that - it's a trap!

I had no idea that receivers (or any device) could advertise HDMI 2.1 but have reduced bandwidth. What the hell, thank you bigly

This is still not real hdmi 2.1, even with the updated board. Iirc it's 24gbps and does not hit 48gbps, making it useless for gaming. I do have one I got in 2020 and it works well with eARC so I just plug my pc directly into the tv
eARC is really the workaround people a lot of people with new tvs should be using until the AVR makers can get their act together. I'm still using a 10 year old Denon 4311 in a system with 4k sources handled by the tv switching and it's fine.

It's going to suck replacing that 4311 with anything remotely similar on the audio/amp side these days, whenever I drop that cash the damn thing needs to work.

Nice to at least see front pre-outs on a receiver this price. I really would like a full 7 channels of pre-outs for my speakers. My Amigas and C-Note Center channel really could use more power than a AVR can provide. Great sounding speakers, but they certainly lack in efficiency.

I guess I will keep waiting.

Yamaha has so many different model #'s. How does this compare to the TSR-7850 I bought from Costco a couple of years ago?

I bought this receiver when Costco first carried them and loved it at first but sadly returned it last month after too many issues. Turning the system/connecting to my TV went from a single push of the power button to a 5-10 min ordeal with having to switch inputs/power on/off and reboot the system on a daily/weekly basis - there was no rhyme or reason to what it was doing (or not doing). Updating the firmware made no difference and Yamaha tech support was of no help (there solution was to unplug the receiver, wait 60 seconds and plug it back in) so back it went to Costco

I purchased this 15 months or so back and have been using it since for movies and XSX. My only gripe is occasional audio dropouts that I believe is eArc related (not sure if TV or receiver is the culprit). Swapping the audio mode on the TV or rebooting the receiver resolves it. It is not that frequent an occurrence though and seemed to get better as time went on and both TV and receiver FW was updated.

I did ship mine out to have the board replaced and just got it back yesterday. Round-trip I was without it for about 2 weeks. Still too early to tell if there is any difference with audio dropouts and I have not re-wired the XSX directly to the receiver.

I'm satisfied with my Yamaha TSR 700, but then again I'm not a big gamer. However the promise of something they couldn't deliver on without a board replacement has caused a huge PR disaster that will likely bite Yamaha in the butt for years to come. Their marketing department needs to be sacked!

The biggest problem regarding the HDMI "bug" is that HDMI.org either purposely or through their own ignorance blurred the certification definitions of what HDMI 2.1 really represented in terms of features. This opened the door to dubious claims regarding the capacity of what HDMI 2.1 could or would do. This has been discussed ad nauseum on the AVR forums since they first rolled out HDMI 2.1. I think a couple of electronics manufacturers were caught flat-footed when they jumped on the 2.1 bandwagon not realizing the loose definition of this protocol, causing confusion and consumer backlash after they couldn't deliver what they advertised or thought they advertised.

A little background on this mess:

Sorry....baby boomer here (I'm old). I have a 20 year old Yamaha currently hooked up to my TCL 6 series TV that I'd like to replace, Is there a way I can directly stream iHeart, TUNEIN, Audacy, etc, on this TSR-700 without having to play it through my TV or cellphone? The Denon recently posted on slickdeals features "stream Spotify, Pandora,Tidal, and more with HEOS"

Yes you can stream directly from several of these services through their app MusicCast, which also will enable you to control almost all of the controls on your AVR from your phone. I believe it supports Tidal, Spotify, iTunes and Pandora, but can't remember all of them.

I forgot where I read it, but recently came across an article on hdmi 2.1 and it basically came across as borderline scam unless you are a very knowledgeable buyer.
