What's with all the laptops having HDMI 1.4? Why not 2.0 at least?

Weird - 15", but no number pad. Wonder what the odds of bumping the power button instead of delete is. (seems weird to me when they put power buttons in the keyboard). Still, the RAM is upgradeable, and the price seems decent, if you don't mind annoying rebates.

Thre are plenty of 15.6" Laptops without number pad, especially the Thinner and lighter ones with smaller footprint. Example, Dell XPS 15, ThinkPad X1 Xtreme.

Dell XPS 17 has no num pad either. The extra space is used for speakers. I personally don't like the idea.

I'm the opposite. I rarely use numpads. I also prefer the querty keyboard to be centered with the mouse. Drives me crazy when I have to deal with an off-center trackpad and an off-center typing position for 99% of my typing just to use the numpad once in a while. If needed I'd just buy an external numpad.

It's not just number keys. XPS 17's page up/down keys share the same keys of arrow up/down with FN. Ins key is shared with Function key(12?). Home/End keys are shared too. I am a programmer. I need to press ctrl+shift+home/end frequently. With shared keys, 4 keys need to be pressed at the same time. It's quite inconvenient. Adding external keypad doesn't help much.

I wanted a laptop with Thunderbolt. I got the 681 (16G and i7) deal a couple months back. They advertised it had Thunderbolt) and then found it didn't have it.

I otherwise really like the laptop, the build, etc. If you don't want TBolt, I think this is a great offer.

Maybe most graphics on a laptop struggle at 4K. I know my intel core 8 series work laptop struggle at 4k just doing basic tasks.

Idk, I had lower end 10W chips like the Celeron j5005 in a mini PC handling most 4k stuff besides hevc ok, and my it 1135g7 nuc which is basically a laptop in mini PC case does 4k playback just fine. I'd suspect these 1.4 HDMI ports also won't support HDR or anything, so you can't use the laptop to play back 4k HDR content on the go, which I think would be a nice feature to see.

Not sure what to tell you there. My work laptop has series 8xxx and 4/8 cpu threads and chugs at 4k trying to load a web page. It's so bad I switched to 1440p on a 4k monitor and that seems to be an excellent compromise because it no longer chugs.

I do use the number keys enough to miss them a bit when they're gone -- especially for record keeping/billpaying at home... but what you're describing with FN'd home/end/ins/etc keys does sound like an absolute nightmare (maybe that's what FN stands for - ha). If I have real work to do, though, I'll plug in a real keyboard.

There's nothing wrong with your hardware. As long as it's 4k capable, it should be able to effortly display 4k content, including playing 4k videos. Unless you are playing 4k games that require massive GPU power.
One other possible cause is that your 4k is connected via DisplayLink.
