It might be that people buying the wired ones aren't expecting a lot from a ~$15 controller or use them less often. As one data point, I have the Mario one that is the "enhanced" version with back buttons / headphone connection. I have not had any issues with it, but it doesn't get that much use.

The difference between the two models: the "enhanced" is slightly larger, slightly lighter, and has a couple extra programmable buttons on the back. (Edit: as orlanth pointed out, the enhanced ones also have a 3.5mm audio jack to plug in headphones directly to the controller.)Personally we like the regular ones as they feel more solidly made (heavier too) and work better for regular to small hands. Just in case that helps anyone.
