Older imac this is 2017 model. Ram and ssd can be upgraded but difficult to do so I think

https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMa...2_EMC_3068

Screen is just 1080p. At $600 this isn't the best idea in the world but not the worst. It works with Monterrey but no telling how long support will last- I wouldn't expect the next os to be supported on it.

Just stating the obvious, but this can dual boot: MacOS and Windows. M1 cannot.

Yep, you're FAR better off just snagging an open box Macbook Air M1 and using a monitor if you want a Mac with a larger screen at this point. The M1 will spank the dual-core i5 that's in this Costco model.

https://everymac.com/systems/appl...specs.html

Per Everymac, this model was discontinued last October.

Good point. For the M1 based Apple devices one would have to buy a copy of Parallels then run Windows within a virtual machine under OSX. The emulation can sometimes bring headaches and errors with certain older hardware or obscure software running under the emulated Windows OS. Booting an Intel Mac directly into Windows doesn't have such issues.

With the late 2020 mac mini M1 selling for $570 (https://slickdeals.net/f/15608452-mac-mini-apple-m1-chip-8-core-cpu-8-core-gpu-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-silver-569-99?src=popular_recombee) this system is not such a hot deal. The only easy upgrade path on this iMac is connecting an external SSD to the ports on the back. Don't even think about opening this iMac up to clean the inside, replace thermal paste, upgrade RAM or upgrade SSD. You have to unglue the LCD panel and it's a huge P.I.T.A.

Good post OP, don't let us discourage you. It's just that this iMac is not aimed at Apple users who do video editing or plan to use Adobe products. I helped a little old lady upgrade a similar iMac and she looooves her older machine.

How is this compared to the one listed by OP: https://www.costco.com/.product.100683899.html
It is $900 but a 2019 model. i5 with 8th Gen 6-core IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i5 Processor 3.0GHz
21.5" Retina 4K Display
802.11 Wireless-AC + Bluetooth 4.2
Wireless Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2
This one is $550 off. Bought this on sale last month but haven't opened it. Trying to see if 24" imac would go on sale or the cheaper M1 MacBook.

there is a logitech keyboard + mouse combo on Amazon for $14.99. Won't that work with a mac mini?

Not an M1 but still an excellent price, especially when you consider that the keyboard and mouse alone cost almost $200 and used 2017s probably sell for around the same money. RAM for this computer is inexpensive and easy to upgrade. One could use this for a couple of years, keep the keyboard and mouse, resell the imac for close to what you paid for it and upgrade to an m1 mini. I have a 2011 with the i5 processor and 32 GB of RAM and it outperforms some of my newer PCs.

Yeah, this thing is ancient. Hard pass at $600. Jump ball at $400. Slick at $350.

I disagree with your recommendation on the macbook air. Right now those're (IMO) not very well priced, even that open box runs around $800 or so. With just 2 USB C/thunderbolt ports (1 when its plugged in unless you buy a hub with PD), it's not a device for everyone and a redesign is around the corner... I just can't suggest a MBA that isn't on sale. Even the $800 price I jumped on in December, that's still $200 more than this and it's up to people to decide if the # of usb ports is adequate or not, coupled with the fact it's **still** ~$200 more than this.

A $560 mac mini also on sale at costco would be a better bet, but you'd need that monitor and mouse/keyboard. As the specs (ram/storage) are identical to this, the m1 would be a better idea because the CPU is going to be a ton faster, ram is probably faster too. I dont think the iMac's upgradeability is enough of a benefit to recommend it instead (as its not an easy task). The only negative about the m1 is the issues the mac minis (and I think the mba as well) have had with bluetooth. I've had issues with my MX Keys keyboard and my mini but using a bolt dongle made things work out a lot better, and MacOS 12.2 I think has resolved a lot of the issues as well. I think the mac mini can be a little finicky in terms of monitors but I've not run into any issues with that. So throw in the cost of a monitor at ~$100 and mouse/keyboard and youll have a much better system than this one.

I would say with the 1 year plus I'm guessing extra year of Costco warranty it's worth it . The extra magic keyboard and mouse are like you said $200 alone Smilie

Is this ALL IN ONE DESKTOP PC without the tower? I have never used Apple products except for Iphones. The specs wiht only 8gb ram and 256 storage seems very weak?

Bestbuy open boxes
Bestbuy open boxes are not reliable. They are not properly inspected before selling. You might end up losing multiple hundreds of dollars if it's not backed by credit card company and crossed 15day return period.

Yes, but won't match the Apple decor.

I'd suggest the best priced Apple is a Hackintosh! 😁

Yes, it works. It's upto personal preference. I am just emphasizing the cost of the product when checked individually. We can easily sell them for $150+ in eBay or some marketplace, if we don't need them.

I had definitely not realized that Apple was still maintaining an Intel iMac in retail this recently.

Even the next Windows OS isn't properly supported on this iMac. Though many will note that Windows 11 could [microsoft.com] be installed on this iMac, without an officially supported CPU [microsoft.com] there's no telling if/when Microsoft would halt updates. You've got a few more years of Windows 10 support, but truly the use case for this machine was tough at launch and remains tough even at this discounted price.

Good luck!
Jon
