I've had soooo many issues with Dewalt bits bending on me the last 2 years.

Yes... bending. Not breaking. They're also dulling quickly.

Their entire line of drill bits has gone to some sort of cheap soft metal. The pilot point, and the Black/Gold bits especially.

I've used these for "questionable" drilling circumstances, as I didn't want to snap a good bit, snd a few years back, if an issue arose, they would snap. And I would say "phew" as I (luckily) made the right call to not use a $15-$30 bit for that job.

The older Dewalt bits didn't have these issues. (But that can be said about nearly every Dewalt item from the past few years.)

And while I'm not trained in metallurgy, it's odd as I've never seen a (non-specialty) drill bit bend. Feel free to educate me on the issue and correct me if I made an error.

The black oxide version of this DWA1184 is the same drill bit set that PF used in his drill bit test [youtube.com].....

For HSS, I don't think there is anything out there that can touch this deal that is surprisingly a decent set of drill bits. You could spend almost the price on just the 1/2" bit.

Ditto on the pilot point, but these split point have been alright for the price. DeWalt drive bits have been junk for quite awhile, but they do have a lot of company.

I did not see these earlier, but maybe better is this Bosch HSS 21pc set [lowes.com] (up to 1/2") on sale for $13 and part of the $20 off a $100 deal. For box store brands, the Bosch cobalt bits [lowes.com] have been the best, but certainly cost more.

this would have been an impulse buy for me, but Lowes needs to get no minimum free shipping going.

I would have bought this but I'm not paying for shipping or going to spend time looking for other items to hit their minimum free shipping hurdle, I'll just end up buying something similar at home depot, and I hate home Depot
Pretty funny if you think all companies are going to get free shipping with no minimum. That's not going to happen especially with the prices of shipping increasing dramatically.

Amazon will give you free shipping if you pay to join their cult.

Sure, Home Depot gives you free shipping even on a $5, but that's not going to last long. I'll bet on it.

But these set say Heavy duty while Bosch don't. What does that mean? TIA

Typically, I would not give much credibility to the 'Heavy duty' designation on any box store brand. If I had to guess from a few decades of experience, I would guess the HSS (high speed steel) Bosch to be as good as the HSS DeWalt.... if not a touch better. Once you get into the cobalt versions, then you are getting into better bits and it goes up from there.

Bosch has stayed pretty consistent, while DeWalt seems to vary a little. At the time, I thought that Project Farm [youtube.com] was spot on with his testing for these consumer brands, but reading the complaints in the forums here, I can't really argue with them because I know DeWalt can vary over time with the same model number.

Personally, I don't care for the turned down shanks on the two larger bits. Almost every cordless drill today has a 1/2" chuck and no reason to turn the shanks down like years ago when 3/8" drill chucks were the normality.

Anyway, enjoy your weekend.

For occasional / weekend warrior use, are these good or should I go with the $16 Titanium set?
