I did not realize this when I bought the optoma P2 6 months ago.
I did use it for a bit without a screen, but the wall paint made a texture on the picture. Also the picture would be washed out when any external light was on.
The first screen I bought was an elite screens ALR grey 3d screen, but then I realized that was for regular projector and I had to return that. I then realized the screen I needed was 1k! https://shop.elitescree
I really didn't want to drop another 1k on a screen, so I got desperate and tried ali express (china). I ended up taking a gable on this screen: https://www.aliexpress.

I would like to preface by saying I'm not a "snob" at all, and my experience is coming from using an old BenQ 1080ST for about the last 7 years. I don't mean that as an insult to others, I'm just saying I don't need the best response time for video games, or the sharpest image, or the blackest blacks. I don't review technology so I can't compare it to anything else, and I know there are much higher quality options out there. I just want a large image that I casually watch and game on at a reasonable price. On to my thoughts:
Out of the box, I don't see the problems others had with set up. The focusing you just click left and right to focus, and I clicked mine all the way to left. I get that the bottom might see "sharper", but the top is still very sharp for me when focusing and when viewing content, I don't notice any blurriness anywhere.
The projector indeed does have an audible high pitched coil whine, you will notice it. If you are just navigating menus in silence, it very well may be distracting. I would say it is quieter than a PS5 fan, but the higher pitch makes it more annoying to me. However, once you put audio on you will no longer hear it. You could probably hear it if you tried, but really it has to do more with focus than anything. If you are focused on the movie/game it becomes background noise and you don't notice it. Speaking of audio, the built in speaker/soundbar is very nice all things considered.
The image quality I think is good. I will preface this on saying I projected in onto a 90" homemade projector screen (NOT ALR) in a not super dark room, as light crept in from the blinds (no curtain). So the conditions were definitely not ideal. Again this is comparting to an old 1080P projector and a few old 4K TVs I have. When I gamed in 1080P mode, it was noticeably nicer than my old projector and when I bumped that up to 4K I was very pleased. A random youtube movie clip in movie mode I thought looked quite good. The HDR is indeed disappointing, I have to agree with other reviewers that I prefer the brighter SDR mode instead. I'm not sure if this is firmware related and can hopefully be updated, or that the internal chip is not powerful enough for good HDR.
Edit: Popped in a UHD of Spiderman HC last night. The bright scenes looked good, but the dark scenes were below my expectations. Not sure if this is projector's fault or if not having an ALR screen is the culprit.
Gaming on the PS5 is very playable in gaming mode. It felt normal to me, previously coming from a projector with probably 30 - 40ms input lag. I've played COD on that for the past 7 years with no problem and this is the same story. I play online deathmatch in public lobbies for fun. I'm not on an e-sports team, I personally just have fun and don't feel the need to have the best equipment in order to maximize my results/rank. I run a 1.6 - 2 K/D ratio historically, which I'm not saying is great and I'm well aware there's millions of people better than that, I'm just using it as a reference point. It's not like I'm going 8-20 every game because of an "unplayable and slow" input lag.
I kind of hate the remote. I'd like to just click one button to switch inputs, instead of having to navigate. However, I think this is the new normal with all these new small remotes with only a handful of buttons. By the way, did anyone else's not come with batteries? I found it odd, especially since there was a spot in the packaging for them. The menu/apps could be better. I found the Wifi to be garbage, I couldn't get youtube videos to load until I plugged in ethernet - not sure if others will have the same problem. There are very few settings and the manual is very small and not helpful. I somewhat had to trial and error to figure out how to turn on HDMI 2.0 and gaming mode, as they are in the input settings and not the normal settings. Settings/menu is something that hopefully can be improved via update, and as time goes by and more people buy the projector, there will be more information widely available for troubleshooting.
Pros:
- Decent picture despite unideal testing/situations for me (ALR screen would improve quality for sure)
- Impressed with the built in soundbar (A high quality soundbar will still be better obviously)
- Price point
Cons:
- System software/settings leave a lot to be desired
- Poor HDR that you will want to turn off
- Audible coil whine
- Picture quality of dark scenes is poor
Misconceptions:
- Unplayable/bad for gaming. Gaming is very playable and enjoyable if you game for pleasure and not competitively.
- You NEED an ALR screen. I think the picture looks fine on my homemade screen using blackout cloth in a room with some light coming in. An ALR screen will bring out the best picture for sure. The way people were acting I thought the picture would be distorted or too bright and straight up unviewable without an ALR. That is far from the case.
For what it is, I am so far impressed. I understand there are better quality options out there and this isn't for everyone, but this is what I was looking for - A 4K UST at an affordable price.

This is an ultra short throw. Not a regular projector.
