There are eggs in your rice. The slower you eat the rice, the more the eggs hatch and populate (and then lay and hatch more eggs). You can absolutely find handfuls of bugs in old, oversized bags of rice.

If you're going to buy 15 lbs of rice, do yourself a favor and FREEZE THE ENTIRE BAG OF RICE FOR 7 DAYS. Once you do that you kill all the eggs.

You can then proceed to leave the rice outside of the freezer, while also being sure to seal it from air and insects between uses. I recommend a gamma container.

There are always bugs and eggs in your rice. Washing your rice increases your chances of being able to remove them, but does not guarantee. If you want to find out if you have any bugs or eggs in your rice, just steep it in water before using it. The bugs float.

All the above also applies to flour and other ground grains.

This one in a poly bag is $10.71 from the Royal store as well?

Keeping processed basmati rice for years on shelves won't age it. The rice with bran is aged and when it reaches an appropriate age, it's processed.
It is the same as keeping a bottle of whiskey for years will not age, the whiskey has to be kept in barrel for aging

Someone has a nice container that can hold those big bags? Had to throw my last one as it was full of bugs. I personally didn't care as they were all dead, but try to convince my wife of accidentally eating free extra protein

I bought the poly bag and mine arrived today with a best-by date of August 2022 so I had Amazon's chatbot give me a refund. I think that's way too soon for a bag this size without letting the customer know ahead of time. I'll still use the rice, but I'm going to freeze it for a week first and then store it in airtight containers with oxygen-absorbing packets.

Yep, this is why pasta boxes often have bugs in them too. The bugs did not get into the boxes they were already there.

Put it in an airtight container with an oxygen absorber and the bugs will never hatch. Freezing alone doesn't always kill the weevils.

By oxygen absorber do you mean those silica packets in vitamins?

No, those absorb moisture, not oxygen. Here's a pack of 80 packets I found on Amazon for $10 as an example:

https://www.amazon.com/Packs-Prem...01MXZ6UR7/

Beef jerky usually has an oxygen-absorbing packet in the bag. I know Jack Link's jerky does. If you have jerky at home and the packets aren't hard yet, they're still good so you could reuse them for your bag of rice. When they get hard, that's when you know they need to be replaced.

Yummy but there's almost a direct relationship between increased triglycerides and high glycemic index rice Smilie The only differentiating factor between how this varies from one person to another being individual metabolic rate which can also be increased by exercise

Basmati rice is a low-to-medium glycemic index food. Brown basmati has the lowest glycemic index of any type of rice.

for decades i have stored this rice under the counter in the original bag. Takes me ~3 years to go thru 15/20 lb bag. NEVER had any bug problems. But you can go overboard if you want.
