I don't know if it is area-specific (Raleigh NC) or it's just me, but fwiw, after 3 visits to 2 different Costco stores within the last 2 weeks, I cannot understand the obsession some folks have over Costco. Sams with Scan&Go is sooooo much more convenient in general and lines in Apex NC store on Sunday are absolutely insane - I haven't seen lines like this even in some airports.
Don't laugh at this lol, but honestly the whole Costco experience even feels a little bit like a cult to me
I'm still learning and exploring, but my point so far is that if you have Sam's membership and you like it, especially Scan&Go part, you probably don't need to join Costco to save you from disappointment.
I went to Costco very early Sunday morning and bought the voucher on Groupon on my phone in the parking lot. There were already a dozen cars getting gas. Cashback sites helped me get a few shekels back and it was easy. I walked into the Costco which had recently opened, and went to the membership desk. The line for cust svc/returns was already at work but no one came to membership for like, 10 min. Finally a lady showed, and I showed her the voucher. She then tried to tell me that the voucher didn't work well in their system, and that I should upgrade to the Executive Membership and everything would be easier and not take a long time. I said no, because I didn't want to complicate the deal more already (between the groupon voucher etc. it was already complex, and she tried to say I could still get $60 of value somehow, but English was her second language, and I really struggled to understand her...she also seemed to imply that the $40 coupons wouldn't work easily). She then tried to upsell me on the CC. I said no to that too. She finally gave up on the upsells, It ended up taking 15 more min just to get the computer to work and get through the process which required a manager to do something on the computer, and taking my picture before she finally just handed my card to me. Overall, a terrible experience I hope no other SDers have to deal with.
I received both vouchers via email just the next day (Monday) after signing up, so that was easy.
A lot of SD flame wars over the infamous Costco vs. Sams Club debate. FWIW, yes, Scan and Go at Sams Club is an absolutely superior experience. I find myself often scratching my head why other Sams members are standing in line when they could just Scan and Go because it is awesome. That said, the other plus is that Sams Club seems to offer membership deals more frequently than Costco. I also find Sams Club, at least my local one, a more pleasant experience than Costco because it is less packed on busy weekends.
Where Costco feels different is in their products. IMO, the products at Sams Club are very workmanlike and tend to be more utilitarian in comparison to Costco, which seems to have all sorts of interesting, more unique products. I can't quantify it, but their offerings seem more dynamic. Costco's return practices are well reputed here on SD as well, and the Costco deals seem to be more frequent and have higher engagement on the SD threads, though some of that may just come from Costco folks having a higher degree of enthusiasm and being more vocal.
Can we just say that both have pluses and minuses, and for each individual, YMMV, especially based on their relative location?
Not sure about that. They scan every item again just before leaving store anyway so it defeats the purpose.

In contrast to your experience, I had an employee help my mom and I quickly and didn't spend more than 30 seconds trying to upsell the executive with the CC (I interrupted him to save him of the ritual essay). Got his manager to come over to approve the membership after filling out a credit card for autopay. Forgot to add an email, but did that online by registering an online costco.com account and we saw the details of the membership with the cc that was applied into it with autorenewal. That was Sunday and we didn't get the coupons right away from Groupon as of Tuesday. Hoping to see them arrive by Thursday so I can have myself added as a secondary (held off in case they don't send the gift card and coupon as I am a secondary under my dad's account that expired last month). It is like you said, it's YMMV with employee and location. The membership is kind of a must for me because of the weekly gas refill helps when Costco sells it cheaper and I use a PNC credit card with 4% cashback on gas. I fill up mornings before work at 5:30am and the lines are non existent at the pump.
Also, I am married & had a card that expired. My spouse was not on my primary or household card, but she obviously has the same address. Can she sign up for this or no?
