Program to test HDD for errors

11,861 2,022 May 25, 2022 at 08:30 AM
I remember in past threads about External Hard Drives people always recommend testing the drive inside the enclosure before shucking them for internal use. That way if the drive might fail, it will do so during this testing process. But now I can't find info on what program is recommended for this use. Could anyone help me out please?

Also, does this method cause a good drive to end up failing because of the high stress or whatever? Like if I were to run a 2-year old drive through the test, would that cause unnecessary risk to the drive?

Does this program quarantine bad sectors if there are any but leave the drive usable?

Thank you

Find out the brand of drive in the enclosure and they typically have drive tools on their support page.

The more you use a drive, the sooner it will die- be it for testing, or form typical use.
Keeping most electronic devices cooler generally makes them last longer, so the cooler you keep your drive while under load, the happier it will be and should have more longevity.

It's one of those 14TB EasyStore white label drives. The manufacturer software is best for that? Not any 3rd-party open source software?

Like DC said, use the drive manufacturers own software.

That's like asking "is it better to go to the dealership or to a local mechanic is better?"
The answer is "It Depends..."

If you were getting into the weeds on your drive's health, then you'd not be asking us here, you'd already have a preferred software to use.

You can take a look at this site for another set of opinions.

I like crystal disk mark but it only benchmarks your drives read and write speeds. If you're doing a recovery or something along those lines, it will require very specific programs and the proper know how so you don't mess up the drive. YouTube might have some good tutorials and more information.

nuke and boot would be best free DBAN

https://dban.org/

Just have it overwrite the whole drive 4-6 times if it does not fail you will probably be fine so run DBAN then the drive mfg tool to test the drive and if it passes you will be fine make sure you keep the drive cool. You don't want to kill the drive because it is in an enclosure if you are going to take it out
