The chromebook won't die on the AUE date, and your apps in Linux and Android would continue to take updates, however the ChromeOS and integral browser do stop receiving updates. As the risks associated with ChromeOS are relatively low thus far (i.e. -sandboxing works), creating a path to maintain browser updates past the AUE date really makes the basic Chromebook experience an potentially evergreen one.
Good luck!

But, I don't see munch in the way of success stories on the r/ chrultrabook reddit, which is the best way to find out if people are hacking specific chromebook models. You'd probably have to be ok sticking with the googley Crostini or Crouton, just in case going native linux backfired on you or turned into too much of a chore to get working.
9 times out of 10, it's better to just buy a regular ol' windows or native linux notebook instead of trying to hack a chromebook, unless you're doing one of the old C720's or something that have had a community hammering on them for years and can be hacked blindfolded. The newer chipsets aren't as easily done, and many have lingering issues like audio or sleep modes not working. In general, if you're not seeing a bunch of "this was so easy to get working" posts, it's not worth the wrestling match to save the $100 or whatever vs just getting a laptop that has full linux/windows support out of the gate.
- ips screen
- touch screen <-- since chromebook supports android apps/google play store IMHO touchscreen is a important feature
- 1080p
- runs decent.
- loud
very happy with mine.
Alot of people don't realize with current Chromebooks you have PLENTY of offline app choices.
- easies is the google app store. while not exactally desktop replacement I fnd alot of android apps do what I needed.
the CPU is x86 based but it runs arms based apps fine. I side loaded alot of APK from my old and phones on to this chromebook and it runs fine. though in 3D games it is notiably slower but for normal apps it runs fine. and not noticable.
- install linux on it. (google it it is pretty simple to do on chromebookos)
How is the BIOS on this thing for adding an external SSD and dual booting to something like Chrome OS Flex, or Gallium OS?

Does the monitor fold back to turn it into a tablet? I'm interested in a cheap large screen device to use as a HomeAssistant kiosk attached to the wall.
