Anyone considering an LG fridge should read this carefully.

https://www.lgfridgesettlement.com/

tl;dr their compressor design is poor, resulting in limited lifespan of 2-5 years (if lucky).

If you still want to buy an LG, be prepared to replace it within a few years.

Your comment cannot be blank.

Irrelevant to this deal - I got one of those 4-door fridges (french doors top and bottom) a couple of years ago and I can't go back.

I'm terribly unorganized and these bottom freezer drawers end up hiding a bunch of frozen foods that I forget about because it's hard to access them.

If anyone else has this problem, I highly recommend trying out the 4-door fridges (mine is Samsung).
Samsung can be had cheaper. Nobody really wants Samsung

Where's the best place to get extended warranty on this fridge?
Costco sells the Allstate 3 year warranty that starts after the standard 2 year warranty:

$120, I'm planning to purchase it for this fridge. We had so many issues with our Kitchenaid fridge that is less than 5 years old. $120 totally makes sense to me to purchase the coverage.

Our premium Kitchenaid died yesterday and after dealing with so many issues over 4+ years, I decided to order this LG fridge yesterday. I'm looking forward to it being delivered Thursday. I plan to add the Allstate warranty they offer for $120 to extend the warranty out to 5 years. You have up to 90 days from purchase to add the warranty.

It could be an hope that mine won't fail. I have an older version of LG with no new features and its been 8 years and still works great.

If you purchase through Costco Citi Card, you will get additional 2 years after the standard warranty of 2 years. So you're covered for 4 years.

It says the All State protection plan will cover from years 3-5, any idea how that works? Is it from year 3 to 5, or after the coverage (standard + citi card) of 4 years, say years 4-7?

This is a great deal. This model, but with two bottom drawers (instead of one) is not even close to this price.

Samsung makes garbage quality refrigerators and I tell people to look at other brands. Their icemakers fail within a couple of years on most models and then you're like me, using ice cube trays because they want to replace the whole icemaker for $500 when it's the water line inside the fridge that freezes up due to poor engineering.

I've had a couple of Samsungs, an LG, a Whirlpool, a Bosch, etc., and all had some varying level of issue (e.g., ice maker, ice build up, clicking noises). I also did extensive research (plus leveraged the public opinions via multiple threads on fridge deals here on SD), and the general consensus seem to be all brands have quality issues and that "they don't make fridges like they used to."

With that said, when I was in the market for a new fridge a couple years ago, my first choice was LG. LG didn't have the 4-door style fridge on sale at the time, and I took a calculated risk and went for the Samsung. No issues yet - it's been by far the best fridge I've ever owned. Getting this fridge for ~$1k was a steal via the Best Buy open-box fire sale at the beginning of the pandemic.

We had one of these delivered Aug 2020. It had died twice in the last 3 months. Randomly. It seems to over heat and the compressor freezes up. It usually takes a day to recover before it works but you lose everything in the fridge/ freezer.

Warranty service comes out in 10 days but not when the problem is happening and says it's working fine.

Buy an extended warranty and get a thermoworks alarm thermometer so you know when it's warming up.

Quote from GPz1100 :
They're all great while they work and/or under warranty. Does CR look at models past a certain age? Unlikely.
Yes they do. Every year they ask all subscribers to complete a survey, and report which cars, appliances, devices, etc. they own, how old it is, and if it broke (with cars they break it down further into type of repair). It's not perfect because the survey is voluntary. But it's a helluva lot better than hearsay on the Internet.

LG refrigerators score above average in CR's reliability surveys [consumerreports.org].

Likewise, Yale Appliance does a similar report. Since they both sell and repair appliances, they just take the number of service calls they get for a unit they sold, and divide it by the number of units they sold to get a reliability rating (what percentage of units sold needed repair). LG refrigerators are the most reliable brand by this measure [yaleappliance.com]. (Here are their reliability ratings for all appliances [yaleappliance.com].)

The problem with asking repair technicians their opinion is that they only see half the story. They repair a lot of LG and Samsung appliances because people buy a lot of LG and Samsung appliances. Not necessarily because they're less reliable. To get a true measure of reliability, you have to take the number of appliance of that brand which needed repair, and divide it by the number of appliances of that brand in use. Repair techs only see the first number. CR and Yale Appliance see both numbers, which puts them in a better position to gauge reliability.

You'll sing a different tune when you have $$$$ worth of food spoiled because the compressor failed
Yup. That's the problem with LG's refrigerators, not their failiure rate. They don't fail that often. But when they do it's usually the compressor which fails, which is catastrophic (all the food inside becomes trash).

I didn't trash or donate my old refrigerator (which still worked except the icemaker). I had them put it in the garage, empty and unplugged. I plug it in every few months to keep it lubed and in working order. I figure if the compressor in the LG refrigerator I got fails, I can move all the food into the old refrigerator. I have a separate chest freezer so not all of my frozen goods are in the LG. Of course this isn't an option for everyone, so I totally understand people wishing to avoid LG refrigerators because of this risk.

(The old refrigerator was a bulletproof Whirlpool side-by-side over 20 years old. I could probably get the icemaker repaired. But the problem I was having was that newer food packaging seems to assume you have a wider freezer. And it was becoming difficult to squeeze the frozen foods I bought into it without first unboxing it. Unboxing frozen foods is bad in freezers with an automatic defrost cycle.)

Quote from lpeters82 :
I bought this refrigerator and it broke in three months. It was under warranty, but LG couldn't find anyone that would work on it.
I spoke at length with a appliance repairman when my washing machine broke. According to him, LG pays less for warranty repair than other brands. So many servicemen and repair companies simply refuse to do LG warranty repairs. Resulting in longer wait times and (probably) poorer service (the better shops who can charge a higher price simply don't do them, leaving it up to the low-end fly by night repair shops).

Quote from TooManyToys :
Keep in mind it does have two drawers inside. It is just that there is only one external door, so you must open both. But inside there are two levels and they slide independently. I have this fridge and love it.
It's 3 levels in the freezer. The big deep drawers attached to the outside door. A sliding tray (appropriate for short things like popsicles), and bigger sliding drawer (the left side is occupied by the craft ice tray).

Other oddities I've noticed (I have the counter depth version of this LG, my sister has a Samsung, my parents have a Whirlpool, all french door style).
  • The spring in the LG's door-in-door is not enough to close it on its own. If you forget to close it it will half-shut. But it won't completely shut on its own like my sister's Samsung door-in-door.
  • The LG's ice is substantially clearer than my sister's or parents'. I do have RO filtered water while they have just filtered water. But the LG's ice is clearer than even my old Whirlpool (when the icemaker was working) using the same RO water hookup.
  • The water dispenser icemaker on the LG is in the door. On the Samsung it's inside the refrigerator. I dunno if one is better or worse. But I do know Samsung gets dinged a lot for icemaker failures in their reviews.
  • The interior ledge heights are kinda annoying. A tiny bit too short to stick a carton of milk underneath. You have to raise the ledge to wine glass level, which substantially decreases the space above.
  • It has an air filter inside, which might be handy if you store some smelly foods. The replacement interval is supposed to about 6 months. The first filter lasted a year before I got the replace filter message. The next one, I got the replace filter message after just 3 months. I dunno what criteria it's using to decide when the filter needs replacing. But that's a huge variation in longevity.
  • The rear of the craft ice tray (in the freezer) has a big cutout to allow the freezer icemaker to slide past it when you open the freezer. If you need a bunch of craft ice and aren't careful removing the tray, you'll spill a bunch of round ice cubes into the space under/behind the refrigerator. Ironically if they'd been rectangular, they probably wouldn't spill so easily. But being round, tip the tray too much and out the back they go.
  • Speaking of which, the craft icemaker is really slow. If you empty it, expect to wait about a week before it's full again. I wanted it for extra ice when I go fishing, so it works fine for me. But if you're throwing parties every other evening and want the clear round ice cubes, it's probably not going to make them quickly enough.

Quote from BobDoledoyourrole :
Did you tip the delivery people
I tried to tip them when they delivered my refrigerator from Costco. They said they're prohibited from accepting tips. I gave them some chilled bottled water for their trip back.

I have a GE fridge. Except for the occasional ice forming problem, it's going on 14th year now (knocking on wood). Today I open the back panel to clean the condenser coil and surprise surprise the compressor is made by Samsung! Sometimes behind those expensive KitchenAid, Kenmore fridges that everyone is heaping praises on is the same LG/Samsung compressor that everyone is trashing!
