It's decent for a 2x2 + 2x2 design, but the price can drop lower.

We're currently in a router price exodus. Kinda like GPUs.
I've had the big brother version of this since January, the GS-AX5400 and it's been great. Easy to set up with the app and I haven't had to reboot it. I think this is a killer deal for this price from a reputable retailer. You can find these on ebay for a hundred bucks but you still pay tax so in the end I think it makes sense for peace of mind to just buy from wal mart for a few bucks more. You may be able to win an auction for the AX5400 for a little more than this but you are always chancing it with ebay imo.

Is there a router that can make my 2.4ghz wifi go faster? I'm getting a pathetic 50Mbps on 1 gig service. 30 feet away, I'm getting 1.7Mbps.
Do you have to be on 2.4GHz? I'd recommend 5GHz, and most routers made in the past 5-ish years support that.

Any newer AX router will increase your 2.4ghz speeds BUT ONLY if the 2.4ghz client is newer. Passive boost to speeds is one of those things Wifi 6 AX brought with it. Some routers have been able to push close to 200Mbps on 2.4ghz at close range which in the past would be impossible to get over 120Mbps. At 30ft You will see an increase but it might only be 20-30Mbps more so 80ish Mbps, that's a complete guess cause everyone's environment is different and that plays a huge factor in speeds.

Got this same router on clearance from Walmart for $59.70. Haven't hooked it up yet but looks decent

Check your local Walmart I got that same model for $25 I got 2 and the AX5400 for $25 as well.
You guys are lucky, walmarts in chicagoland area do not carry Asus anything! The GS-AX5400 was a steal on that clearance.

is this also known as the RT-AX58U

i was recently in a bind with my old old router malfunctioning and i 'ate' the price of 249.99 b4 tax, on a RT-AX86U. its nearly $300 for me.

i have a 200/20 or so mbps cable subscription. nothing fancy.

i do use a vpn and flashed in the merlin firmware.

i thought with openvpn on this router i was going to get DL test speeds 'near' 200/mbps but i dont.

i get about 80 mbps.

much better i think than the router i replaced.

main question is should i get this router on this thread and return the RT-AX86U

or buy the asus https://www.asus.com/us/Networkin.../RT-AX68U/

i do have wifi6 devices.

Is this a "deal" or just normal price? I don't see any discount. Just $116.

Same FCC code, but the layout was updated on this one + amplifiers were changed. So yes and no.

For 200mbps, this should be fine across 30ft but if you wanna save a little bit of money on an AX86U, newegg has the gundam zaku edition for 229.99 + tax currently. (Same router with a paint job).

It's a sale but I don't except pricing to fluctuate higher.

For 2x2 designs, this should be the normal price going forward but covid messed things up around 2020.

Is this an upgrade over the Asus RT-AC86U? I don't have any devices that utilize the WiFi6.

Kinda sorta. I mean buying online from Walmart you're basically buying from Chinese retailers and market place sellers anyway. Not actually buying from Walmart

so when using a vpn on the actual router...how does it work, can you like pick and choose which devices are tunneled through the vpn or is it like "thiswirelessnetworkID" is tunneled through the vpn?

At the time of listing this was being sold and shipped by Wal Mart itself, not some sketchy third party seller which I wouldn't touch personally
