The sad part is you have brightness and high contrast plus some night light adjustments.
If you get a unit with a poor screen, there is no adjustments you can make.

It was a worthy purchase especially Google offered many free digital stuffs---various games and apps, free Stadia, free Google One which gave me another free $5 credit, free 3 months of Disney Plus, That was a very worthy purchase after the bonus items and a solid product by itself. However, I have stopped buying new Chromebooks due to all the limitations and no more free stuffs from Google. Chromebook Perks are very much dead at the moment.

That's a weird comment to get to the top of this post .
That said, Chromebooks will have more features as they've gained popularity and now more high end machines

The extra memory is tempting, however, the machine is not touchscreen
Last week, very lucky, I grabbed a cb514-1ht-p2d1 (N4200 4c4t, 8G RAM, 64GB eMCC) for $100+tax on ebay. 96% battery health, no charger.
Of course a third-party refurb. Sold out for now.
Just keep watching on ebay seller. My case is just a reference how low the price could be.
But try to think of them as a huge smartphone with a keyboard. If this still doesn't work for you, then clearly CB is not for you.
To me, they are some ready-to-lose or ready-to-break (because they're cheap) devices to surf pages or stream videos. Occasionally I also reply emails or browse family photos on it.
My spin 713 is much much faster than my surface laptop 3. Same price and the chrome is a 2-in-1 So you can use it on the treadmill
