Edit: hah, I was curious to see if they still make those snap model kits (they do) and it turns out some of them even use lego compatible connections as their build method! https://www.amazon.com/Airfix-J60...00PPPSZIO/
So it does indeed seem like technic and those snap model kits are well on their way to meeting at the same middleground

The body panels are like.... Less than 5% of the build. The gearboxes, transmission, suspension, steering etc are hundreds of pieces and the main reason to build anything technic. If you want closer to the look of something you'd probably want creator sets which are mostly brick elements and generally look "better"
