I redeemed through Origin. My experience was that I had to have a method of payment on the account to go to the cart to redeem it. PayPal, credit card, or EA Gift Card seemed to be the primary methods. I wasn't actually charged, it came out to 0 in the cart of course.

If you choose Paypal you don't have to login to your paypal account. You just continue and it will skip adding one.

Steam won't allow adding without owning Sims 4, but Origin seems to allow it.

How does this work with Gamepass since we don't own the game but now that's it's going F2P we don't rent it from Gamepass either.

Yep. From Origin, choose PayPal for your payment method, then continue. It won't take you to log in to PayPal, so you don't even need a PayPal account. It'll go right through for ya.

I am using the Origin link and I am required to pay $4.99 plus tax. Checkout takes me to the PayPal login and I am required to select a method to cover this charge in Paypal before clicking on "Agree and Continue".

And you have Sims 4 in your Origin account, per the OP? Because it indicates that the DLC is for those who already have the base game.

I didn't know I wouldn't have to login to PayPal, so I chose those PaySafe option, which just asked for my ZIP code. Then it didn't ask for anything else either.
