Ideally, you want to find the "EU" size. For an adult male, it should normally be in the 40's. Then when you buy shoes, just look for the international size chart for that brand/gender and find what US size for that brand matches your "EU" size (here is the chart for Adidas [adidas.com]).
I'm a US 11.5 in some brands. In others, I'm a US 12 or 12.5. I'm always the same EU size though. I stopped using US sizing to pick shoes a couple years ago and it made me much more confident to buy shoes on-line without trying them first.
