The poor workers at these salons are getting peanuts for pay compared to going independent. My last Great Clips $22 plus tip haircut was not the best, my wife had to fix the hair in the back at home.

I've noticed that a lot of hair cutter people at Great Clips are smokers, is it the stress of the job?

Sigh. I searched yesterday and found a coupon for $5 off. I got my haircut this morning with that. This definitely would have been better as my city is the only one randomly listed from my state. Next time.

Let me rewrite more accurately your personal experience: The employees are overpaid. Despite my paying $22 plus tip, they still performed unacceptably. They are paid so well that most of them, according to my statistically significant sample, are afforded the luxury of engaging in the expensive habit of smoking.


I've also wondered how much the employees make given the time/price of a mens cut (a good portion of their work). Given your observation of their expensive habits, I'm now satisfied they are paid well.

I'm wondering if it's just a stressful job, I'm not sure. I just know someone who started at a small store making peanuts and is now solo making way more money. She literally does no marketing, takes time off for weeks and the crazy thing is people wait for her to come back to work and then get a cut or color so she rarely looses any money. It's a crazy gig. Solo hair people are also keeping most their wages under the table, it's pretty interesting.
