I noticed the USA Today article you quoted for this, certainly not a random Internet source. While I am by no means an air purifier expert, I got lost geeking out on this stuff earlier this summer when I became frustrated with some of the games and wording differences the vendors use. For example, they will toss out a random sq.ft rating, but they each seem to pick different room air change rates. To address this, I built out calculations to compare industry-standard CADR rates as an accurate way to actually compare air purifiers.

For the two air purifiers mentioned, the DustMagnet 5210i seems be significantly less efficient than the Winix C545 per below where simply speaking, higher is better (and if someone does consider themselves an expert on this and want to educate me more, please!):

CADR Dust
DustMagnet 5210i CFM:133
Winix C545 CFM:245
DustMagnet 5210i M3/hr: 226.1
Winix C545 M3/hr: 413.1

CADR Smoke
DustMagnet 5210i CFM:137
Winix C545 CFM:246
DustMagnet 5210i M3/hr: 232.9
Winix C545 M3/hr: 418.2

CADR Pollen
DustMagnet 5210i CFM: 140
Winix C545 CFM: 232
DustMagnet 5210i M3/hr: 238
Winix C545 M3/hr: 394.4
I have a blueair purifier. It runs 24/7 and is merely white noise. For the few times in years it has been off for a few days, I can tell the difference in air quality.

My suggestion is to buy one that's rated at a higher square footage than the room this will be sitting in. Since it will be overpowered, you can run it on low and get the minimum amount of noise while enjoying great purification.
The Winix C545 is rated for 360 sq ft is HEPA and on sale for $99 right now at Costco with an extra set of filters included in the price. That's an amazing deal.

As mentioned earlier Costco has the dustmaget for $200 with an extra set of filters which cost $50 so maybe a slightly better price at costco with a better return policy.

A review that compares the dustmaget to a different winix model, the 5500 says

The Blueair Dustmagnet has a faster rate of clearing out particulate matter, such as allergens. The Winix is still pretty good at clearing particulates, but isn't as fast as the Blueair. On the other hand, the Winix is much better than the Blueair at dispersing volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

If you're mostly concerned about allergies, the Blueair Dustmaggnet 5410i is one of the best air purifiers you can buy. If you're looking for more of an all-arounder, or if you work with paint, varnish and other materials that release ample VOCs, the Winix is for you

Bought 2. Everywhere else it's regular pricing. I have a levoit one currently and it works for me. Less allergens and sucks in all the dust and dog hairs in my room.

Where are you seeing that Costco gives two sets of filters?
I agree it's not clear but it would be pretty weird for them to advertise the purifier comes with a set of filters if it's not a bonus set when no one sells air purifiers without filters.

How can you tell the difference in air quality? I had an air purifier but it ended up in the closet. I can't tell the difference. In what scenario will you notice a difference?
If you have allergies you should have fewer symptoms. You can also monitor your sleep quality with and without the purifier in the room to see if it makes a difference. You can use an air quality sensor to measure if it's doing anything by taking readings with and without the purifier.

Would air purifier help improve oxygen level in an apartment with sealed windows? There's an air duct in the apartment but I always feel the airflow sucks.
Air purifiers don't create oxygen. They filter allergens and potentially harmful particles from the air.

Debating between two of the Winix c535 at Costco for $200. Or the Wyze with an extra filter for around $210. I enjoy wyze products, but having 2 separate rooms might be nice.

Does anyone know which one would be good for a basement room for daughter with asthma and allergies? Are any mentioned here food for possible mold?

The one at Costco has different dimensions listed… are they internally the same?

Called Costco customer service.

They confirmed that it comes with dual filters as a "1" filter replacement. But only includes 1 set for first use.

if you look in the section about changing the filters, it states it uses 2 of the filters in 2 different drawers. So I think it just comes with one set whether purchased from Costco or blueair directly. Costco in particular is really good about stating if an item comes with bonus filters. There's no mention of bonus or extra filters

The carbon filters in the winix will not effectively remove VOCs - you need pounds of it, especially if you're looking to capture VOCs for more than a few days, if it even lasts that long. Besides, you could always just order a roll and cut to fit for this model and achieve the same result as the winix
