Well, I've just been on the phone with the local paper's circulation department, letting them know that this weekend I'm looking at purchasing 2 dozen papers and want to know if I can get an ongoing subscription discount if I have something like a dozen or so papers delivered every Sunday. After putting me on hold and talking with his manager, I was completely stonewalled - there are no discounts available, I'm SOL, and no they won't put me in touch with my local carrier to discuss one on one.

Mad

Annoying.

It seems to me that paying $1.50 per paper (PLUS TAX!!) is just silly when all I want is the inserts. It seems to me that the newspaper business is hurting enough that I should be able to get bulk discounts, but I've been smacked down.

For those of you who are buying 20, 30, 40 papers at a time, you're not really paying full price for these things, are you? I do realize that $1.50 is a small price to pay when you're using Qs worth hundreds, but still - paying full price for an in bulk item just seems silly.

Any tips for the newbs here on how to get a good price on these things? Where can I look for a source of either just the inserts (on Sunday - no mailing off for them), or for cheaper papers in bulk? Confused
Do you pay full price for your Sunday papers every week?

The Miami Hearld has what is called the Early Sunday edition on Saturday for 50 cents with ALL the Sunday inserts!! It's great. Check to see if your paper does the same.

I don't have delivery and we are often busy on Sunday, so sometimes I get out late. It drives me nuts, because there is someone near me who does this. I have wasted 1.50 a few times. We also have a special machine for the Sunday only paper that is stocked all week (same price all week) and that one gets wiped out of inserts also. It is particularly annoying because obviously if you are wanting the Sunday paper on Wed. it is for the coupons. laugh out loud
Our papers are picked up EVERY night. Now I have an inside source so don't get many from machines.

The Washington Post is only $.99 at WAGS here in VA and the small local paper is .75 and carries usually 2 inserts each week. I find for the few things I stock that buying the Qs is a great option as well.
Which city or area in VA?

Most small store retailers (newsstands and deli stores) in NYC area have to "return" the cover paper for credit for the unsolds and the rest gets tossed out.

If you talk to your local retailer about picking up the "guts" for a fraction of the cost; I would assume most of them will be willing to. As it is destined for the garbage anyway.

I have done many a times and still do it in the LIC area, especially when the P&G booklet comes out.

The Newsday and Dailynews are 1.25 each around here, usually carrying 2-3 inserts. I end paying 50 each just for the guts (whole newspaper minus the cover page)

Have fun...

I'm trying to figure out who my local paper delivery person is for the same reason, sacgirlpt - I'm hoping one of my neighbors may have the person's information, since they're old-fashioned and probably pay the person directly. My fingers are crossed!

Cookie, you have a PM from me. Thank you!

fitnessfan, we do have two free papers in the area. I'll check them out, but I have never seen inserts in them. We'll see how that goes!! Big Grin

Thank you all for your help!
Every year sometime in December my paper includes a Christmas card with the Name & Address of my carrier I know that doesn't help right now but maybe worth it to sign up for home delivery just to get the info

I buy the Sunday early edition that comes out on Saturday and has all the sunday inserts in it. It's .50 compared to 1.50. It's The Miami Herald. Check to see if your city paper has an early edition.

The AZ Republic is $2 on Sunday. However they have a home delivery subscription that is $1/week that only includes Sunday and Wednesday. It works out great because I just want the Qs and the grocery ads.

My SO also picks up 10+ copies of the weekly free Spanish newspapers here. They only contain SS and are a little shorter, but usually contain all the Qs I'm interested in. (And for awhile there they had a General Mills full insert every week. I just had a field day at Albertsons GM sale in conjunction with quadruple Qs.)

He'll also ocassionally get some inserts from his coworkers. Usually I just ask him to get extra P&Gs since most other Qs I can easily find.

I buy my newspapers at Wags for 75 each on Sundays...
They didn't even sell them until I told them that WM sold them for 99 each...I told the mgr he would sell a lot if he beat that price and sure enough, within a month they had them for 75.
Some people ruined it tho b/c of getting so many of them and they now limit you to 5 papers

My Mom lives in FL and the grocery chain near her sells the Sunday paper for 39 cents on Tuesday! (I think it's Publix?) Whenever she is headed up for a visit, I tell her to buy ten. Bonus is her coupons are better for doubling up here!

You know the GNR in our area (and I do mean OUR since we live in the same area LOL) sales for $1 at Walmart on Sundays (at least at my Walmart) where as the WSJ sales for $1.50. I do buy all of my papers. I really hate P&G week b/c I buy 20-25 papers FrownEEK!

I think I'm too far west for the GNR, and Wallyworld near me sells the Journal for $1.50 (cover price). Perhaps it's a YMMV situation?

man alive I'm so jealous that ya'll have found places for "insider trading" (lol). Our local papers are $2.00 and I *USED* (note past tense) to subscribe. I got so sick & tired of week after week getting a portion of my inserts (ads & coupons both). I would go through the delivered paper and find coupons either completely missing and half of the weekly store ads not included. My husband would then have to go out and buy my paper(s) in order to get ALL the "guts" of the paper. I had called the newspaper "headquarters" & reported the problem a couple of times. The papers would get better for a couple of weeks but then the same thing would happen. This pi$$ed me off beyond belief so I just plain out cancelled our subscription. When they called to ask why (wtf, weren't my 2 previous complaint calls obvious as to *why?*) I told them b/c our carrier was not including everything in the paper. Evidentally our carrier doesn't want anyone else to see the Kmart ads or get coupons, lol. Sure, Kmart sucks & I don't shop there but I'll pricematch their ad at WM at the drop of a hat! :oP
