I would not recommend them because of it
When driving a direct drive hub motor the electric motor shaft will rotate at the same rpm as the wheel. When driving a geared hub motor the electric motor shaft will rotate faster than the wheel depending on the gear ratio. (for example gear ratio 2:1, motor will rotate twice as fast rpm as the wheel)
What does this all mean for the rider? In general geared hub motors have better torque at low speed (i.e. better at accelerating from full stop to moving), while direct drive motors are better at high speed (i.e. maintaining a top maximum speed).
