I know that a lot of people don't have this use case, but how is this for game streaming locally?

Thanks OP!

Wanted to mention that the 64GB model does NOT have an ethernet port. You can only connect via Wi-Fi. If you want ethernet, go with the 128GB.

This... or save $25 additional dollars and go with the previous generation that came out last year; I think it's still avaiable on Amazon?

Anyway, less GB, but you get an ethernet port; and the difference in speed is negligible, especially if you aren't doing gaming. Plus it has Thread, which the new one here on sale does not.

Agree with this, I genuinely don't understand why they released the 2022 64GB version of this, it just makes things confusing for end users who don't follow along with the specs.

I can only see buying either 2021 model if trying to save money or the 2022 128GB version if trying to better future-proof. I don't think the 64GB 2022 version makes much sense right now.

I am still rocking two of the first generation Apple TV 4K. For the most part still very fast and obviously no ads. Great hardware here.

Agree with all of this, however, just so not to confuse others, the '22 64 gig model does not have Thread, however, as you mention, the previous version has it, as does the 2022 128g version, as well as an Ethernet port. Only they 2022 64g version has neither, which makes little sense.

Me neither if you look at it that way. But increasingly, I look at Apple's decisions from a Tim Cook point of view rather than the Steve Jobs era's what's best for the user. Tim's priorities are pushing up ASP and increasing margin. He's a supply chain whiz so maybe there's something to the process used in the upgraded chip that saves them $, or simply that it justifies a higher price.

Craig and Josiak's WSJ interview was a real eye-opener. They didn't answer any questions honestly and that said so much.

I still keep all my stuff Apple because it works so well together, but I don't kid myself that they care about me as long as they have me locked in.

Isn't this the regular price of the new 2022 Apple TV? How is this a deal?

HDR+ Is supported only in this version of AppleTV. Also going from A12 to A15 is pretty big, which might matter a few years down the road (speed , future tvOS updates, etc.). The new box is also lighter and runs cooler.

I have the 2021 32GB from Amazon still unopened - perhaps someone can answer:

I am tired of my Roku and having to go to through the home screen to switch apps.

I bought the Apple 4K specifically because it allows one to switch apps by pressing the TV button twice.

Question:
If I'm running YTTV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Britbox and YouTube, will I be able to app switch seamlessly? I want to avoid the "Who Watching" menu. I went to the Apple Store and the unit was in demo mode. I thought I read somewhere that not apps play well.

Looking for a confirmed answer, thanks in advance.

[And am waiting to see if the 2022 goes on sale - might decide to exchange]

Thanks!

All true but it's just marketing to make people think they are missing out if they don't buy the newest version. The reality is...

1) Only specific manufacturers have adopted HDR10+ because it requires a royalty. Also, in addition to having an HDR10+ capable TV, and the 2022 ATV, you also have to be watching a channel that offers programming in HDR10+. That's a lot of "ifs," that I'm guessing apply to a not a huge % of TV streamers.

2) A15 processor is only going to be "felt" when, or I should say, if, playing iTunes games. The A12 in the 2021 ATV remains plenty fast to quickly scroll up and down, open and load channel apps. But also, so many ATV channel apps are just poorly built it just won't matter in this aspect.

3) "a few years down the road" is irrelevant in 2022. In a 2-3 years ATV will either have been replaced and heavily discounted. Who knows, an M1 version might be out with WiFI 6E or 7. There simply is no need to rush in to buy one now if you can't take advantage of the A15 or HDR 10+ today.

4) "The new box is also lighter and runs cooler." Honestly the "lighter" part is surely a gag on Apple's part. Weight is irrelevant to the ATV -- whether it weights 7.5oz or 15oz who cares. It's a set top box not a tablet or phone. And I've never experienced ATV getting so hot that it had to shut down or that the fan was so noisy it interfered with my viewing. Heck, I didn't even realize it had a fan until the 2022 was featured as fan-less. And honestly, I'd rather have a small, silent cooling fan to move around air.

5) As others have noted the "low end" 2022 model strips out Ethernet and Thread support. If you want that it's another $30 or so.
