If you were to ask this same question about a standard smart watch, I would say no, it probably isn't worth it after such a long time since its release. New processors and screens would make a 3 year old smart watch a tough purchase to justify at this price. However, being a Garmin, those features don't factor in nearly as much because the watches sensors are still relevant and software continues to be updated. When they put out a watch model, it isn't designed to be replaced with something new every 1-2 years. They put out great watches that last.
That being said, we should be on track to see a new Vivoactive model in the near future if their trends hold. Maybe within the next year or so. However, if there are not enough hardware advancements in sensors to justify a newer model, they will continue to hold off. The down side to that is that with every iteration they have released, I think the price has increased for the newer model by about $50-$100. Hopefully, the Vivoactive 4 release prices were the highest we will see. That alone may help justify buying the V4 now instead of waiting for a V5 release at 2X+ the price you would pay now for a V4
I honestly think this is a great price for this watch. If I didn't already have a Fenix 6, I would have wanted a Vivoactive 4 variant having owned the Vivoactive HR and Vivoactive 3 over the years

Both do it. And the HR sensor seems pretty accurate.
Also tracks blood oxygen levels but in mine this function is slow and sluggish.

It is just over 3 years old but I get what you are saying. You have to think of Garmin watches a little differently than mainstream smart watches. These are activity trackers first, smart devices second. That being the case, they are the best in class analytics and will continue to get update and support longer than a smart watch. The same sensors are often times used in multiple models across their offerings for years until a better standard is out.
