Really? I've done this for literally decades with other external drives. Every time it's just a typical SATA drive, just depends on which one. If this had some kind of proprietary interface, it would be a first for me. And why would it? Have you actually ever cracked one open?
Are these ssds the same type of drives as NVME ones or are they something completely proprietary and different design?
I'm curious if anyone thinks 1tb SSDs will ever go below $50.
Wondering how well this compares in performance to an NVME 1tb ssd running in an external enclosure.( but doing that will run around $78 minimum),
and also wondering how it compares to the better Samsung T7 external that went on sale last week for $80, but now $90.
Prices will always go down eventually. The speed will always be limited by the USB Bus speed. It will never match internal bus speeds of NVME. In most cases buying a quality built external SSD will be faster then 3rd party enclosures. The enclosures are meant to repurpose NVME rather then make your own external drive. They use the cheapest components possible because the DIY market for highend external drives has been dead for the last decade.

No I haven't. I'm guessing. Perhaps I didn't understand how you wanted to use it, but when you look at many of todays memory modules, and items like the Sandisk ones that have been selling, it seems that they would do some direct-to-port connection.

thanks for the reply. I also like the Crucial deals x6 and x8 for $70 and $80...seems good, but I still want to wait for the magical $50 price---this wd easystore was almost there, but no usb-c....maybe another year. lol

I know you can easily shuck external HDDs. I never tried to shuck a SSD. I thought the issue with the SSD was not a proprietary interface but that they are normally soldered directly to the controller.
As I said, I have never tried but it could be a huge hassle if it is soldered.
