Its a smart house hub that's fully local so no internet required like Samsung Smart Things. This lets you automate things in your house like lights, power outlets, temperature sensors, motion sensors. Pretty much anything that supports zwave or zigbee smart home protocols.

As mentioned the big advantage of this one, its fully local unless you want to use it through the internet you can, and it requires no subscription fees.

Check out the features page for more info:

It can work as a home alarm. However I wouldn't trust it, I've had mine break and/or freeze out of nowhere. Nothing is better than a hard wired alarm panel. I don't remember of the top of my head if push notifications work over the internet without either extra infrastructure or paid subscription.

Out of all the pre-built hubs, Hubitat is probably the best. However, if you want more advanced features and ease of use nothing gets close to Home Assistant. Which you can get some "pre-built" hubs for.

There is a bit of a learning curve with Hubitat, while rules for automation are pretty good once you have them setup, creating them are a pain, They seem to keep on adding paid features to try and suck you into a subscription.

In conclusion, Hubitat is a good cheap way to get your foot in the door of home automation. If you are really serious about home automation then Home Assistant is what you should be looking at and what many Hubitat owners do migrate to.
To be honest there is not much this cant do, its so versatile it puts a lot of other hubs to shame, and the best part is it can be very easy to operate to extremely complicated for those who want more in depth setups.

Here is a tutorial video on how to use the notifications app:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUpsW-SftVc

The Hubitat forum for those who are new to hubitat is a treasure trove of information and people members and moderators who like to help, if your thinking of trying something there is a good chance using the search function you can find someone else already tried or accomplished it.

You can save local backups. Not sure I follow the original post.
To clarify this better. The "free" backup allows you to do a full backup of the database, apps, drivers and so on. It's useful for a soft-reset. If you do a full reset, where you reset your radios or backup to a new hub it doesn't transfer over the paired Z-Wave or Zigbee devices. So you will need to re-pair all the devices again and then map them to the rules/actions.

The "paid" backup subscription backs up the network radio data so you can transfer everything from one hub to another or if you do a full reset.

Matter is the new standard for communication. I wouldn't jump into zigbee right now unless you are OK replacing a lot of things in a couple years.

If you want to protected and purchase only one hub buy Smartthings? That's laughable. Protected how exactly? The experience has continued to be downgraded. It's not 100% local so good luck trying to control everything with your internet goes down. Home Assistant with HomeKit > Hubitat with HomeKit > Smartthings.
In terms of Matter support, which was the subject. HE can't support it without a new model or an add-on thread border router. Plus with Lua on ST more devices will be local. You'll have all technologies in 1 single hub. I use and like both.

Do the custom device handlers for Smarthings work for Hubitat?

As a Habitat user for 5 years it has been local from day one. Smartthings was tasking about "local" control 7 years ago. Matter is great and all, but HE already supports so many devices and if it doesn't there is generally some way to talk to devices if needed if there is no direct intigration.

If you want basically very simlar capabilities to Home Assistant in an OOB experience with very little maintenance HE is a great option.

I have over 150 devices and 100+ rules/automations which has been running for years without any issues. I just run the hub updates once in a while and maybe add a couple devices/rules here and there.

Even when I had a power outage for a week I had my generator running with all of my lighting automations working without a hitch.

How does one get started? I'm fairly tech savvy but HA seems like an entire new beast.

You can basically install it anywhere. A VM, old computer, Docker, Raspberry Pi. Basically anything. Other than the installation device if you are going to use Z-Wave or Zigbee a USB dongle for that technology. https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/

Thanks very much. So it seems like cost wise and simplicity wise, Hubitat is a clear winner though?

Cost, simplicity, quicker barrier to entry for the average person, yes.

There are some "pre-built" HA hubs out there. But they are just Raspberry Pi's in a box. Really all comes down to your level of comfort. Like I said in previous posts, once you get the home automation bug, you'll want something better and more feature set so you'll jump over to HA.

I already have Samsung ST. Then Alexa pokes it's nose and grabs all the devices to its fold. So, can Hubitat co-exist with the others? The local (no internet) feature might come handy in those situations. I read about H long time ago.

You can not pair zwave devices to multiple hubs, they can only pair to one hub at a time. So for instance if you have a light switch in the kitchen it can only be controlled by either the ST hub or the Hubitat hub, it cant be on both.

What you can do is put whatever (the real important things) you want local no internet operation on the Hubitat and the other more wifi or internet oriented devices can go on the ST till you are ready to convert everything to one hub.

Alexa is not really a real hub but it is a form of smart home automation and it can be integrated into both hubs, but unfortunately that integration will die the second the internet dies. There is a company making a local only smart home assistant that will work with hubitat it is on preorder and costs an arm and a leg right now but it will make even voice commands fully work local with no internet.

I got one of these and was not impressed. I think if you were invested in SmartThings then it could be a good replacement, but even as someone who was, I thought it was junk. Really buggy. I ended up using Home Assistant, which is a lot better IMO.
