How are these better than non-Starlock Makita or Bosch?

They will only fit starlock tools.

And, more importantly than not fitting non-starlock tools, these will fit Bosch tools; kind of a pita that they didn't provide an OEM way of adapting to standard oscillating tool bits.

I do prefer to use starlock blades on my makita starlock oscillating tool when possible. However, since I already had a lot of non-starlock blades, I decided to pick up the adapter that Oslo Tools makes. It was $40 and it requires you to use a screw to release and install the blades, but it saves me a lot of $ since starlock blades rarely go on sale. Their shipping was surprisingly fast for this coming from Norway. The adapter is built very well and is definitely worth it.

Is StarLock standardized? Will both brands work on a Makita?

I was thinking about getting one of those. Any performance difference?

I have Starlock version of both the multi-tool & grinder. Haven't had much use of the multi-tool yet, but I love the ease of switching discs on the grinder, and secure fit w/ lever-lock

No. But just make sure you crank the screw down when you replace the blade. If you only lightly tighten it then the blade can come loose. As long as you tighten it well, it'll stay tight and the blade won't come loose. It sounds obvious, but you'll see what I'm talking about when you get it and put a blade on.

sure have a sale after I bought the metal cutting blade. It was annoying at HD between the milkwakee 3 pack vs the diablo 2 pack. I only needed to cut one piece of metal to open up an old metal outlet box... ugh
