I'm not sure why they are still sellilng the gen1s, especially at this price, knowing how nasty the internal tank (constantly elevated temperature creating a brewing ground for bacteria) can get and how nearly impossible it is to open up the machine and clean the internal tank. the 2nd gen fixes this issue--GE has been fairly quiet about it.

My biggest concern is repairability. You can't! You spend this much for an icemaker and then in a year and a half when your circuit board goes out, there's NO support. You can't even pay to have it repaired. An ice machine this expensive should not be a throw away item.
I've wanted one of these machines forever, but that price tag is still way too hefty. When these machines for below $200, I will consider it, and even then I won't be jumping to buy and add another appliance to my countertop.

These always die adjust after the warranty expires. They can also be VERY LOUD. If they go, just throw it out because nobody is going to fix it. As others noted, these are also easy to go unsanitary, especially when recycling ice. It's not just bacteria — mold can grow in the water reservoir and connective tubes and once that happens, you will never really get rid of it. In short, these are a terrible investment and buy.

I wish you could hook up a water line to these countertop units so you wouldn't have to refill the reservoir.

Got one of these during the last Woot deal and have to agree with the other comments here. The 1.0 should be pulled off the market. It is a terrible piece of junk. Noisy, ice melts and needs to refreeze frequently, and sometimes just stops working until you unplug it for a while. Gets super hot, too... and I was lucky enough to get one that actually works. I returned it and was going to get the 2.0, but that one has a bunch of issues as well (and who's to say it won't be repairable in a few years like this one).

After doing a little more research, I ended up getting the Mueller nugget ice maker from Amazon. It was $399 there (so still cheaper than the 2.0), and much higher rated. It's quiet, cool, and does not allow the ice to melt as quick as the GE did. Loving it so far.

I have wanted one of these forever and ever but I just cannot justify the cost. I buy bags of ice from Chick-fil-A for $1.59. Even if I use the high calculation of going through three bags of ice a week, it would still take me over 2 years to break even with this thing. Most weeks, we don't even go through two bags but that's because it's just two adults in my home.

It's such a shame that there's no competition in this realm. I would gladly pay over twice this price for a unit that was more sanitary and reliable..

Buy it with an Amex and make a warranty claim when it breaks, have done it twice now with an icemaker. Seems like the best workaround on the reliability on these

Another vote for the 2.0 model - we have had ours since Feb '21, and it is life changing (like having Sonic ice 24/7). A couple friends got 1.0 versions from Amazon over the summer (I guess it was a Prime Day deal) and the machines are louder, uglier, and from talking to them, more problematic. I paid a bit more for my 2.0 from Best Buy, but it has been well worth it. Do note even the 2.0 can be a bit loud at times.
