i still have the 1st gen kindle fire 7 " , knock on wood , still works fine.
Heavily-modified and locked down android. It's an ultra-budget tablet. It'll work for watching videos and playing candy crush. Don't expect much more than that. It's so cheap because Amazon uses these tablets as a loss leader to get people into the Amazon ecosystem, with the hope of upselling them on other services like Prime, Music, Cloud, etc

I can still install Google apps on the plus without any root or mod so I wouldn't call this locked down.
