If they were regular minifigs they couldn't fit all the electronic internals and they wouldn't be interactive. My 5 y/o loves them as is.

Oh I agree. It doesn't seem to really work together well. But my kids love the Mario and Luigi and play with them ALL THE TIME. They just use their imagination. They like the sounds.
I think that's the point. Kids use their imagination to play with Mario sets after actually building the sets, like with Playmobil but with sounds. It's like 2 toys in one. I think Mario sets are great from kid's point of view. From my parent side of view, I like kids playing with Lego Mario sets than playing video game all the time.
