Pro versions of IdeaPads come with descrete GPU, AFAIK. What makes you say that regular IP5 is garbage? They are generally well-reviewed online, and seem to be pretty good value.

You can pretty much go with any of the major brands as long as the construction is some kind of high-quality material (aluminum alloy or reinforced carbon fiber).

I liked the Acer Swift 3 https://slickdeals.net/f/16189888-acer-swift-3-14-intel-evo-laptop-12th-gen-intel-i5-1240p-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-550-15-565

Lenovo Thinkbook 13s looks good too, but you need to pay attention to Lenovo's coupon pricing https://slickdeals.net/f/16255015-thinkbook-13s-gen-4-laptop-ryzen-7-6800u-13-3-2560x1600-16gb-lpddr5-256gb-ssd-710-06

I also like the Dell Latitude Refurb from Dell Outlet on eBay. Pricing varies, but occasionally they will pop a 16GB configuration for less than $600.
Thanks for the info! first i've heard a negative about the ideapad so i'll start looking elsewhere. really appreciate it!

I don't get it - when the 6600hs with 16gb ram and 1tb drive get posted for almost this price it's crickets, but then this rolls around
Are you referring to the 6600HS 16" one?
That's comparing apple to orange.

This 14" touchscreen at 3.11lbs can be considered as ultraportable using the older standard (now it usually needs < 3lbs)
The 16" non-touch screen is at whopping 4.30lbs.
I'm not definitely not in that 16" market (and touchscreen is a must to me)

I've been using 13.3 or lower with touch screen since WinXP Tablet version for travel and also powerful enough for working remotely.
(now the 14" because of thinner bezel is actually smaller than my 5 years old 13.3" Yoga)
Ultraportable but with enough power laptop is usually more expensive than the larger size laptop as they need to pack things into much smaller footprint, lighter weight and better cooling.

No. There is a 14" pro. Last time it was 640 bucks.
