Great series.

One of the first authors that introduced me to the world of fantasy.
Read these books all the time as a kid. Haven't read them in 20+ years but whenever I see something floating down from a tree I think "The Threads are here!"
Likewise, Anne McCaffrey is a GM scifi author. These books were great because most of them were Fantasy, however, if you delved deeper into the stories, it turned out to be a Scifi Epic!

I was a sci-fi book club member back in the day and got all of the Dragonrider books - they were that good. Extremely well detailed and written. I still have the books in storage containers, now this makes me want to re-read them during my morning and evening commutes. Excellent story-telling.
Me too! I moved recently and realized I'm actually missing a few volumes. But that's what I used to spend my allowance on lol

Can you read just these 3 and legitimately stop, or is it ongoing for the next 20-ish books?
You can definitely stop after these three - they form a pretty complete storyline. There's a lot of additional books that take place in the same world, but I never felt that any of them lived up to the first trilogy.

If you make it to the end of The White Dragon, I don't think you'll want to stop, so I think for your first visit into Pern, stop at the end of Dragonquest.

Dflight and Dquest focus on one cornerstone of Pern society (the Dragonriders), but The White Dragon, while still focusing on Dragonriders, has a more ensemble cast that includes characters from the Harper Hall trilogy that takes place between Dquest and The White Dragon.

If you did go into White Dragon and found you have to see more of Pern's worldbuilding, there's the aforementioned Harper Hall trilogy, and from there this "main series" of Pern has another 4 full-length novels that develop and resolve multiple society-altering threads (pun to Pern lovers) that were the consequence of events from the first 2 trilogies (none of the books cliffhanger though so you shouldn't feel compelled by the plot to start the next book, I think it holds attention purely by the worldbuilding and character development). So, 10 books in the main chronology.

From there it's up to you if you love the setting enough to read a couple side novels about specific characters in the main series, or read the 1-3 novels that go into each of a few critical periods in Pern history.

a bit...out of time, if we are being real about it, but still solid classics. The text of the novel is generally positive and optimistic, with probably more misogyny than other sci-fi of the same era...but only because these books actually have female characters. The YA books are way way way more positive towards women, with the basic story being 'fark the haters, women can do what they want' with some tendencies towards being a mary-sue/woman-who-dislikes-other-women (I didn't notice this myself, but had recently been looking around good reads and its not an unfair point). tldr its an old, old series and some bits have old, old ideas, but its still good.

to those asking about the series as a whole, I'd say this set + all the weyrs is the 'main story' of the universe, dragonsinger/dragonsong/dragondrums (YA books) are introducing you to important characters in the main series as they grow up, dragondawn is the prequel which filled in a lot of the gaps for teenage me but I wouldn't re-read personally.

Well, I guess we are lucky you didn't say we should ban these books for their non woke ideals LOL.

I lost interest after the books drifted from their strong connection to technology. The blend of tech and fantasy in the early books were honestly excited and intrigued me. When it became pure fantasy and they had lost their past I stopped the series and never came back. My loss probably.

-edit- to be clear I only read first book or two or three 2 decades ago. I just remember it being enjoyable in the beginning (the first book of this deal) and less enjoyable after that and I quit.

I think you kind of have it backwards, at least as far as publishing order. The stories start as (apparently) pure fantasy, with hints of a technological past. The technological connection was expanded upon in novels that were written much later but take place much earlier than the first books.
Were you trying to read them in chronological rather than publishing order?

Been awhile but I believe these three are a complete story but the story does continue after these. This is one of those series that covers thousands of years and there are series and stand aloned spread out over those thousands of years, in the timeline these are near the end. These are generally considered the ones to start with.

I don't know. I never made past book….15? Maybe 16.

I wouldn't exactly call people toxic but they definitely should not be eaten.
