Dflight and Dquest focus on one cornerstone of Pern society (the Dragonriders), but The White Dragon, while still focusing on Dragonriders, has a more ensemble cast that includes characters from the Harper Hall trilogy that takes place between Dquest and The White Dragon.
If you did go into White Dragon and found you have to see more of Pern's worldbuilding, there's the aforementioned Harper Hall trilogy, and from there this "main series" of Pern has another 4 full-length novels that develop and resolve multiple society-altering threads (pun to Pern lovers) that were the consequence of events from the first 2 trilogies (none of the books cliffhanger though so you shouldn't feel compelled by the plot to start the next book, I think it holds attention purely by the worldbuilding and character development). So, 10 books in the main chronology.
From there it's up to you if you love the setting enough to read a couple side novels about specific characters in the main series, or read the 1-3 novels that go into each of a few critical periods in Pern history.
to those asking about the series as a whole, I'd say this set + all the weyrs is the 'main story' of the universe, dragonsinger/dragonsong/dragondrums (YA books) are introducing you to important characters in the main series as they grow up, dragondawn is the prequel which filled in a lot of the gaps for teenage me but I wouldn't re-read personally.
Well, I guess we are lucky you didn't say we should ban these books for their non woke ideals LOL.
I lost interest after the books drifted from their strong connection to technology. The blend of tech and fantasy in the early books were honestly excited and intrigued me. When it became pure fantasy and they had lost their past I stopped the series and never came back. My loss probably.
-edit- to be clear I only read first book or two or three 2 decades ago. I just remember it being enjoyable in the beginning (the first book of this deal) and less enjoyable after that and I quit.
Were you trying to read them in chronological rather than publishing order?
