IRS VITA and TCE Programs
The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals.
The VITA program has operated for over 50 years. VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- People who generally make $60,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
Gotta love SD. People just can't/won't/don't read and then like to complain for no reason.
Norton is SEPARATE. You don't need to do jack shit if you don't like it. Delete the email if you think they're going to infect you by opening that email. It does not install with HR block. BTW, I did use Norton recently and it worked just fine. It's your choice if you want to use it or not. They went through overhaul and it's not like the old days where it used to eat up a lot of resources.
HR Block price is good. It's not the greatest deal but it's not a bad price either. Amazon had it at one point for $22 and the reason for me to get it there was because you can use your digital credits on the digital copy of this.
Uhhh...It's currently less than $20...

How do you define "good." There's an idiotic belief out there that the tax software people use do some kind of magic to "max out your refund" but in reality the refund is going to be the same across different software unless you did something wrong. 90% of people are just entering w2 info and simple tax credit eligibility. Freetaxusa handles that perfectly fine and very easily, and it handles more complicated taxes easily as well. I have a schedule H for household employees and some dividend income. as well as a rollover and none of that was particularly difficult or non intuitive in freetaxusa.
but even if you think it's not as "good," it's free, you can literally start turbo tax, H&R block and freetaxusa simultaneously, see your refund before you pay anything, and they should all come up with the same number if you did everything correctly. in which case why would you pay for any of the options when freetaxusa is free.

You are spot on, but I think what people are saying by good is ease of use or features and that varies between products. I do like the purchased software packages as my taxes are local to me, and I can file an amended return if need be. I also don't particularly like my tax stuff out there in the cloud. You are right again where many that have very simple returns assume some complexity that it really not there and they could even file on paper or one of the free services in moments if they liked.
Maybe because Free tax sells your personal data to who knows who to pay for the service? Nothing is free.
Source? According to privacy terms of service free tax doesn't share information with third parties and h&r does. Just because it's a download doesn't mean data's not being collected somewhere. Also hilariously: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/22/p...eport.html

Wrong. Because, they are part of the free file alliance. Created to offer free tax prep so the IRS doesn't create their own software. H&R and Intuit were members but dropped out of the program recently.
Why are people using anything other than free tax USA at this point?
Mostly laziness and inertia. And I can e-file do both federal and state together. And my online account already has my recent tax return records and can pre-fill some information for me.

FreetaxUSA cost $14.99 to do both federal and state. It is basically the same price as Block and many years I got significantly cheaper than that. You do get the state e-file with that, but I find many features of having my taxes done on my computer to be worth the little effort to file sate on paper. Block also imports last year's data. With Block I can file unlimited returns both federal and state for family and friends without the need to pay again. I can e-file five federal returns that way but can print and mail as many as I like. With Block I can get to my return if the internet is down. I can create multiple test returns or modify my return to try different scenarios without writing over the data I am working on, all at no additional cost. With Block I can file an amended returns for any prior at no cost with software on my computer while I would have to pay $16 at FreetaxUSA. What exactly makes your way better? I suspect that the nose and the phone only internet crowd are the lazy ones and really care little about cost versus features and the long-term tax situation and pay just for the ease to file on a device they are comfortable with.
Hoping to get confirmation - I purchased this combo and never did anything with the Norton side of it. I then received one of the apparently common Norton junk bill NG emails.
I'm assuming that since I never setup the Norton, and AFAIK they have no payment info for me, i am safe to just ignore it and take no action. Also curious if anyone else received similar Norton related spam billing correspondence after a similar newegg/Norton purchase.
