I returned from a Royal Caribbean cruise just yesterday. We booked it after having a great cruise last November. They must have made some policy changes after the new year because it was not enjoyable at all.

The menu has changed with far less options, and the food went from amazing in November to just okay. They are REALLY pushing the paid dining options, and I think a strategy is to make the free main dining experience less appealing.

There are generally three people who help you with your cruise: a main server, an assistant server, and a room attendant. In the past they have been fantastic. I am wondering if Royal issued a pay cut to employees because all the workers seemed just plain sad, and the service was pretty bad. Moving around the ship, the morale of the crew seemed really somber, too. Not the typical smiles and greetings, and some crew would even mutter stuff under their breath as we passed by. Several times I heard crew making fun of or hating on "Americans".

The cruise was also woefully crowded. Not a seat to spare, and despite there being signage to not save seats or deck chairs, everybody still did it without so much as a prompt from the crew. It was impossible to sit anywhere but your room, and lines for anything were unbelievably long. That's typical on a cruise, but this one was over the top.

Two other things... the ship constantly smelled like weed. There are smoking sections, but nobody cared to follow that rule, so every inch smelled like nasty, skunky weed.

Then at night, 12 am to 3 am, somebody in a nearby stateroom was blasting loud music. After complaints from several nearby staterooms, the crew did nothing to stop it or help.

I used to love cruises... now I don't think I'll go on one again.

Went in may, first real no mask post pandemic to alaska. Quantum of the seas. Ship sucks, long lines no room at bars ever, no openings for excursions. No space for ride signup. Upcharges for everything. Terrible food outside the dining room. No late night selections besides pizza. The ports were a mess. Victoria b.c. was barely a 3 hour stop. It was supposed to be a glacier tour and we did not see 1 glacier (qent 3 hours in an inlet just to turn around for small chunks of ice (that seemingly did not get bigger, 100% sure they were just late to the next port) best part of the cruise was the crisp cool weather all week and white line rail road in skagway. In ketchikan i rented an atv from a local, by far the highlight. Drove out to an island and went up a mountain, was 10 feet from a grizzly bear. Everything else involving the ship was miserable. nasty loud kids/family banging the walls next door and rude international "citizens" everywhere made me want to request a refund.

You Very Accurately described how Cruising has changed from a Leisurely Gourmet experience in the past with almost everything prepaid to an overcrowded junk food experience designed to maximize On Board Revenue today. After 107 cruises my best advice: Avoid the Largest Ships where you're not catered to but herded like cattle & choose the Smallest Ship you can afford. Often tips etc are included with fare.

Damn which part of hawaii you went to? I have been there 3 times, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu. Always had a pleasant experience anywhere i went.

Taught in Ewa Beach and Waianae on Oahu. Some kids couldn't do homework because they had no electricity. Some had no running water. Lots of poverty and crime once you get away from the tourist areas, even more so if you're Haole.

I see. I didn't venture that far, only kualoa ranch and waikiki in Oahu. I stay mostly in touristy area anyway. Good to know since I am going back there in March.

Definitely hit up the north shore (pipeline / turtle bay) and Hanauma Bay (snorkeling) if you're going back to Oahu.

Not impressed over those prices, but if I were going to do it, balcony all the way. Best prices come from casino deals. I'm always getting free or nearly free from Royal & Carnival. You still have to pay the port fees, taxes, gratuities, but a good deal. Lots of times you get free drinks while you are gambling. Some are interiors that they won't budge on cheap upgrades, some are generous and let you upgrade or give you balcony right out of the gate.

Has anyone actually been able to get this "sale"? When I price it out with the kid, they raise the prices of the adult fares significantly. When I called into royal Caribbean they couldn't replicate this sale. Very suspicious. A kid does not sail for free when the adult cruise fares magically jump by $300-400 pp. they advertised that a balcony room was 780 for the particular sailing I was looking at. The moment I click that one, and go to price it out, it becomes $1100 pp for the room. So what exactly happened to $780?? None of the reps can tell me why there's all of a sudden jump. They all said but they applied a kids fare of $0. No they didn't. All they did was add it to the adult!

Yeah, but kids sail free is a pretty good deal because Alaska cruises are usually excluded from this promotion. Obviously doesn't help people with no kids, but if you are ok putting 4 in a cabin this is a decent savings.

Probably because you are looking at a different cabin category when you add in the kids. The cheapest balcony "guarantee" cabins where they chose the cabin may not be available with 4 guests, and you are moving up to a higher category stateroom.

I had the 1 kid. And it's on the page before it tells me it's $xxxx price. Then when I click it it gives me a completely diff price. I add in how many people in the beginning so they have all the necessary info from the outset. It's false advertising is all I'm saying with the kids sail free promo. The fact that the reps couldn't get it to reflect the price showing either means this promo is not a promo at all. Unfortunate.

For Carnival & Royal, I budget $50 per day on cruise for my slot machines habits. There's no rhyme of reason with these 2. Royal is mostly interiors, they don't actually email them, you have to look on their casino page with your crown & anchor card. Carnival will email you, but you can also look up your VIFP # on their vifp offers. page.

MSC I'm just learning on. Got my first freebie from myvegas slots, did my usual budget and they approached me with a 30% certificate. That one you have to hit points, the higher the better. But when I got home, I saw they had some excellent deals that you could combine that 30% with. I am booked for mothers day out of Brooklyn 7 day caribbean, premium balcony for 933, plus 200 onboard credit (so 733)

My vegas is 3rd party, you never know when you're going to get a chance to redeem your loyalty points. You play My Konami slots, My Vegas slots on phone, My Vegas classic slots on desktop, My vegas black jack, on phone. And I think MGM slots (not sure). The points all go to one My vegas account. I've been doing it for years. I don't go to vegas where most of the offers are with an occasional atlantic city and other places. I save them. My vegas has a redemption page with all the things you can get within the app. But when the cruises come out, it's a feast. You had better be quick. I've managed, Royal, Carnival & MSC with this. MSC was just this past August. NCL has been on and off for the past 2 weeks. Them I won't get into. I only redeemed one December of 2019. When the shutdown occurred in March, they didn't want to play nice, so I won't give them a penny. So I don't have much info, but you do have to pay admin fees of 20 per day per person on their freebie.

All these free cruises, you pay taxes & port fees, tips, soda & alcohol, and upgrades, unless you happen to come in with a deal for the alcohol & upgrades.

I'm sure others may have something to add with this. There are plenty of FB pages on MyVegas. You can also find casino pages for the different cruiselines to get more ideas.

Yeah, apparently when I book with just 2 adults, I get a 2-person cabin for ~$380 each. When I book for 4, the first 2 passengers are $914 each, the next 2 are about $375 (plus $226 in taxes/fees per person). So they might be taking off the $375x2. But I can't replicate their calculation....

Cruise Fare: $2,578 (375*2+914*2)
Discounts (2):
  • Flash Sale: -$100
  • 30% off and Kids Sail Free -$2,397 ????
Subtotal: $81
Taxes and Fees: $905.92
Total Price: $2,047.92 ????

It's approximately: (914+226)*2*.70 + 226*2, probably a coincidence though.
