Solid price, highly recommended place to visit. The food and culture is amazing.
They are the same.
Vietnam is my top country on my bucket list. Went once and love it there. Great food, cheap, and friendly folks. Lots of attractions and it's safe to go anywhere alone....minus the traffic

I'm holding out hope there will be a sub $500-550 flight from LAX to Saigon this year.

are they holding you for an hour? hell no, if they can't get anything from you. Then they'll move to the next group. I took videos in the immigrant area and they didn't do shit to me. Don't let a few bad experiences ruin your vacation.

the only thing I gave them was $100 b/c I carried 10 iPhones back.

I gave them $5 just to get them off my ass! Lol.

Let's not get ugly in here. HCM and Saigon is for whoever wants to use them. Just names, we all know the place is the same.
I just went back this past Nov-Dec and went from North to middle and to South, I asked the people in both of the regions and they don't even care what's it called and most just call it Saigon still because it's shorter and quicker to say.

You have no leverage against their 10 tons of pull.
I went back in early 2000 and this was really bad. The airline misplaced my luggage on the wrong plane. I paid them for the day then came back to the airport the next day. They had the audacity to ask for more tips. I had it and screamed to hell with it. I told them to give them back to the airline and let them deal with it. The airline can reimburse me or delivered those luggages to my house according to contract of carriage not HCM rules.

I had it bc the day before when they asked for tips they blatantly make up excuses. The worse one is make everyone in the family sign declaration of goods. It includes me my wife and my 9 months old son who I was carrying while talking to them!
He said what about Dylan, he didn't signed his form....

Lmao look at this guy... Talks a lot of smack about not bribing customs... Ends up bribing customs...

Why didn't you refuse bribing them to see how far you get with those 10 phones... Oh wait cause they would have dinged you for customs taxes significantly more than the $100 bribe.

And before you jump to conclusions. In none of my replies to you did I ever mentioned I paid the any tip/bribes to customs. I'm just explaining the fact that customs gets away with extorting ppl because they can and because of people like you who let them know they can. Pay your tax duties Mr. Righteous! Lol...

Would you rather pay $75 for each phone or $100 for all 10 phone? I would have done the same thing.

Early 2000? Yea, those time were bad. But it's 2022 now. Nothing like 2000. Can't compare from 20 years ago to now.

5 years ago, my mom passport was tossed in the trash cause she refused to pay the coffee money. A janitor later found it in a garbage can nearby, and returned it to my mom. She was extremely lucky with that kind janitor.

If you a VK older over 40+ bark back at them
If you are American born Viet you "only understand english"

Another tip is before leaving and walking out thru scanners, walk slowly and follow behind people with huge boxes/alot of luggage. One guy will flag those people to get money from, and another will flag you to walk past the scanners since they do not want to hassle with you as the people with the boxes will give out.

happened on my last flight in 2019

I'm complaining about the corruption of VN customs agents that's still going on today. Whether you pay $1 or $100 or more makes no difference. Customs agents asking for coffee money is corruption, regardless of how much money you give them. Because you didn't have to pay the last 2 times you went there, you think corruption doesn't exist anymore and accuse people who say they had to pay of lying. Like I said before, just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean that it didn't happen to others. All I know is, it happened to me as recently as last month. My customs agent initiated the money request by saying, "I can help you get out of here really fast. Please give me some coffee money when I'm done helping you." Actually, I wasn't too surprised because I'd already been warned about the corruption by family and friends who recently traveled to VN.

This sounds so fake LOL.... throw passport in the trash? give me a break. My sister has been going there every 2 years for the past 10 years and her mother in law goes back twice a year (she's 86 now! and still going there from S.Carolina) for the past 15 years and not once has anyone approach her or bribe her for money.

Back in the old days when Vietnam opened up, there was a lot of bribery and officials have worked hard to clean that up years and years ago. Now even the Commie govt has sacked and jailed officials who are accused of corruption. Bribing at airports can cost them their job. Why would they want to take that risk?

That's fine if you think it is, but I know one thing for sure is my mom won't be coming back there anytime soon by herself.
