It was easy to read outdoors, stood up to damage, but the measurement was a quarter inch out compared to several others and it was trickier to clip to a belt.

I have bought this. If you look on the back, it says the laser measures from the back side of the unit. Also on the back bottom of it is +3 3/8in/86mm(the length of the unit itself).
You may not have realized where the laser measures from. I pulled out a ruler to measure 1ft with the laser and it was 1ft too. So pretty accurate.
