Mine came with outdated firmware (SN03, current version is SN04). You can get the update from Seagate's site by putting in your serial number. The download takes forever because it's close to dial-up speeds. It comes with a cross-platform command-line utility. I booted to a live Linux session to do the update. Instructions are included. Be careful, the commands are case-sensitive.

This drive has TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery) which is usually intended for RAID setups. I think it's probably fine to leave this enabled, even when used on its own. The default timer appears to be 10 seconds. If the drive can't sort things out in that period, I doubt more time is going to make much of a difference. You can disable (or adjust) it with smartmontools (also included with GSmartControl). However, the setting must be reapplied after every power cycle. Here is the command:

smartctl -l scterc,0,0 /dev/sdX

(Replace sdX with the designation of your drive.)

This drive does not support conventional APM (Advanced Power Management). However, it does have power-saving features. It has multiple modes, including one that parks the heads and another that reduces the spindle speed. These are enabled by default and too aggressive for my tastes. You can use the SeaChest utility to adjust or disable these. Here are the commands for the Windows version:

SeaChest_PowerControl_x64_windows -s

SeaChest_PowerControl_x64_windows -d PDx --showEPCSettings

SeaChest_PowerControl_x64_windows -d PDx --EPCfeature disable

SeaChest_PowerControl_x64_windows -d PDx --powerBalanceFeature info

SeaChest_PowerControl_x64_windows -d PDx --powerBalanceFeature disable

Use the first command to determine the "handle" of your drive. For the subsequent commands, replace the "PDx" with your drive's handle. The second and forth commands display the current status of those features. The third and fifth commands disable the respective features. These settings DO appear to persist through power cycles.

I bought a couple drives from them recently, including this 12TB Seagate Exos X16. The packaging was among the best I've ever seen. The HD was in a sealed anti-static bag, surrounded by bubble wrap, in a box, surrounded by bubble wrap, in another box. The drive was physically immaculate, no dust, scratches, or scuffs. The manufacture date was August 2020. I'm not sure if that's when it was originally manufactured or recertified. After the SMART data had been reset, it had been run just enough to perform one full read scan (which takes close to a day). For those wanting to test the drive, I recommend HDDScan (for Windows). CrystalDiskInfo does not run any diagnostics itself. It merely displays the SMART info from the drive.

The drive works but I have some concerns, as it sometimes seems to take a few tries to calibrate when powering up. The other Exos (an X18) always gets it right on the first try. The drive performs well, with sequential reads/writes around 250MB/s peak. Random 4K reads are about 0.8MB/s, not exactly spectacular. On the other hand, Random 4K writes are over 13MB/s, faster than any other HD I've seen. As far as noise, it seems about the same as the WD/HGST helium drives.

For anyone wondering, the Exos X18 I got from them had a manufacture date less than six months ago. It had 0 power-on hours and obviously had NOT been tested after the SMART data was reset. Its firmware is up to date and I have not noticed any issue with it yet.
Looks like the X18's are $5 more

In a home scenario, basically none.
x18 is slightly faster, but also uses slightly more power. In a home setting in a NAS, the speed benefit won't be realized in any real world situation.

Gparted is a super easy and powerful gui utility.

A lot of Linux distros these days don't require you to even glance at the terminal much less use it. If you're buying enterprise drives like these that aren't meant for home use, Linux is useful to have for troubleshooting.
It was the docking station itself that could only handle max capacity HDD of 8TB

Received my Seagate Exos X18 ST12000NM000J 12TB 7.2K RPM SATA today and plugged into my external dock for testing.

I converted the drive to GPT from MBR but my Win10 Pro machine is still only seeing it as 936GB and not 12TB.

I've looked at the drive via multiple programs (Disk Management, AOMEI Partittion assistance, CrystalDisk, and DiskCheckup and all see only 936GB without ability to expand it to 12TB.

Opinions on what's wrong here?? I already have 3+ TB GPT drives on this computer so don't know the issue.

Doing a full wipe data now.....will see if that allows me to see the full drive capacity.
Yep old docks have strange limits.

Use https://panthema.net/2013/disk-filltest/ to verify the drive once you get it working, files the drive with files and verifies each to ensure there are no bad clusters. Command line so lightest.

Gonna run like 24 hours LMAO

I ordered and received 2 X18, looks brandnew, both passed Seatool long test and had 0 power-on hours. Anyone know how do I check the manufacturing date on the drives, there is no date stamp nor date code on the drive label.

It should be on the label as DOM, Date Of Manufactured. Mine is Sep2021, which is a little over a year.

For someone wondering how loud those are, I got my X18 12TB a couple of days ago, installed it into a NAS, and when I was moving data to it, it got annoyingly loud (the sound of heads moving). Not a problem for me as the NAS is about 10 feet from me and behind a closed door, but I would not use it in my PC. Frankly, I think you don't want any hard drive in a modern PC anymore, go all SSDs

I started in the evening and left it running ovenight, next morning it's done. The long generic one takes less time though, about 5 hours.

Mine doesn't have DOM on the label, that's why I asked if there is any tool can tell. SMART doesn't have it.

Just received my order yesterday. 2 drives. Ordered at 9am. Shipped same day via ups 2 day and arrived exactly 2 days later. Sealed static envelop. Scratches on the metal from being pulled from the rack. All the connections intact. They have been rebuilt in the QNAP nas in RAID 1. They fast. When they're just spinning and not writing data, it's quiet. When they're writing data, it's quite a bit louder than any of my current spinny drives in my other computers - WD Black, WD Red, Ironwolf.

Ordered 3, ran first 2 with seatools and updated firmware. Both silent during testing outside of the case. Transferred them to my NAS. 3 drive is testing now, and it is a bit louder outside of case, clicking that is. will wait the 12hours to see what the test result is.
