I would call and ask before going. They have an attitude.
In other news, FWIW, LACMA is free EVERY DAY after 3PM for SoCal residents. (Does not cover special exhbitions or parking and most of LACMA is a hole in the ground RN, but YMMV).

The following museums in SoCAl are free EVERY DAY so don't waste this free day on them:
(But most require reservations, and you have to pay to park and pay for special exhibitions, so YMMV)

The Broad downtown
Hammer Museum
The Getty Center
The Getty Villa
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

Use the day to go to places that normally charge!

Also, FWIW, Bank of America is resuming it's free first weekends program in SoCal with a ton of attractions being free on the first weekend of the month if you show a Bank of America ATM or Credit card. Check the BofA site for participating museums each month.

Tickets on the site for Academy Museum of Motion Pictures show as $25 - does this mean if you just show up on Sunday the tickets are free or did I miss something?

Yeah I had that problem with the Tar Pits a few weeks back. Ended up not doing it even though I was in the area.

The Tar Pits Museum is really interesting and there is plenty of free parking around it (tons of meters on Wilshire and 6th and free on Sunday). I would use the free day to go there if you want to see it. They rarely give free access. Plus, you can do it in a couple of hours and the Craft Contemporary is across the street and free that day. AND the hole in the ground that is LACMA is also free so you can maximize your day.

I think Long Beach and MOCA have photography right now, but you should check. The photography based museum in LA (Annenberg) closed during the pandemic. It was free as well. Frown

Trouble with discount/free days is that they are often PACKED. :/
Given, better than never going. But if you can afford the regular ticket prices, it might be a better experience to go on a slow day.
