Just avoid refurb from WD. Got one a few years ago and it failed shortly after that and destroyed a part of my data. I did not bother going trough the waranty considering the price of item and possibly receiving another refurb unreliable item.
Yeah, been looking for this for retro game pc and plex. Bought 2!

TO EVERYONE, DO NOT TRUST THIS TO KEEP YOUR DATA OR FOR ANYTHING IMPORTANT. Perfect for some tasks, but as its used, be cautious.

Note: I've had multiple WD drives, including refurbs with no issue (I still have some old 2010 drives churning no problem, and only just got rid of an old PATA due to no longer having my PS2), but with all refurbs, you don't know how much wear and tear. Probably not much, but it can be a roulette wheel. The 2 year warranty is great, but once you lose anything critical it's gone, so make sure you have multiple copies somewhere.
Ebay WD site has WD 5TB Elements SE certified Refurb Portable for 55.99 dollars.

I usually use these as storage device fill it up with stuff, and then put in closet. I don't leave it in PC 24/7. Use for backup or transfer to SSD in PC or microSD card. If you treat it with respect and DON'T bang into it or drop it when it's plugged in PC and it's writing , you should be fine.

I have not lost one yet, I have about 7 of them. Mine hardly has any hours on them, since 99 percent of time they are in the closet in safe place.

Similar previous deals were very popular, so thumbs up even if it's not for me.

Yeah, I picked up some more today. As to the comment to NOT trust this to keep you data safe! YES! But that goes for every drive in existance. It is always, always, always recommended to have at least 2-3 copies of important stuff in different safe places, because ANY drive can go south on all of us. I have 2 NAS's and also use these 5 TB portables to store in case my pc crashes or NAS crashes. I would feel very unsafe it I didn't have a few copies of stuff,

I like your retro gaming idea, ... yes this is good for xbox gaming or ps4/ps5 gaming of older games, and you can attach it to smartphones and transfer stuff to it, as well as transfering from chromebooks, PC, etc.

I think it's good to point out to be very carefully about saving stuff ... most of us have learned this the hard way, right? This is refurb from WD and comes with 2 year allstate warranty. But honestly, for 50 dollars, don't know I would be that upset if I drop it when it's writing, and drive crashes. But I am extremely cautious that I don't bump it or let it fall to the ground. I can see some people putting it in laptop case, taking it out on the go, and banging it as it's writing to drive. It is so easy to jar it, ... as long as people understand that, drive is great for me. 4 of these gives 20 TB of stuff. Smilie

I do believe these are the lowest end offerings of WD, no? Then they're just long term storage drives.

I like to connect these to $15 thin clients with jellyfin, tailscale, and syncthing and give to friends with unreliable or slow internet.

well, yes and no, 5TB is the biggest size in portables you can buy (2.5inch mech drive). But these come in 1tb, 2tb,3tb, 4tb, 5tb versions.

Also, I am "mostly" using them for long term storage drives to put in closet, to protect them and keep low hours on them.

But for 55 dollars for 5tb, they could be good for putting them in gaming consoles, or for plex use, or other stuff. I have one of these I use for just stuff I plan to save from YEAR 2023. I have 5tb portable from 2022 too. So lots of uses, but I have SSD's for PC storage, and SSD's are much faster. These tranfers about 90-120 Mbs. Where my SSD's are 500Mbs.

Since these enclosures are not S.M.A.R.T. compliant how can you even tell if they have been used?

I wasn't thinking so much of the drive size, as I was the line (elements), but I think everyone can more or less agree these drives are definitely in the "long term storage" category

The only external drive to fail on me was 2tb wd portable that was bought new. These we're not hooked up all the time and only used for backups.

I had a cascading backup strategy so I lost some but not a lot of data.my other backups saved me.

Lesson learned and a warning to all.Dont buy refurbs on spinners or at least buy those that are more grunty, like a server based drive.Obviously those don't come in 2.5 form factors.

Another hint,When I was struggling with the dead drive I was surfing recovery forums to get help. That may be a good place to see the reviews on these.

I'm not sure what you are saying. This drive seems to be smart! Look at my snapshot of my WD 5TB portable. What do you think? Does is seem smart enough for you? Smilie
