Just saw that this has a pretty significant discount on sweetwater and pulled the trigger myself. Be sure to talk to a sweetwater rep to see if you can get an additional discount.

Note that both the 25" (SR250) and 27" (SR270) scale lengths have the $500 off + 5% bonus bucks. I personally went for the 25" for the familiar scale length, but baritone players can get in on this too.

Sweetwater was one of the best purchasing experiences I've ever had. It's been a few years but they were amazing to buy from, and I loved that you purchased the actual guitar in the photos.

Anyone have input on how this compares to the other variax guitars Line6 offers at lower prices? I know this one is aimed to look more "metal," but I'm not really sure what difference the tone would have considering they all should have modeling capabilities and are capable of emulating different setups.

That seems like a lot of money for an electric guitar with a bolt on neck , dot inlays, and kind of a boring finish.
I realize it's got a bunch of hyped up electronics on board as you might expect from line 6, - then maybe a hot humbucker, but I just don't see the price/value for your money being that high.
I'm guessing these aren't selling that well and maybe they are another marketing promotion that went sideways?

I agree with most of what you said - I wouldn't pay this much for a guitar like this normally but the modeling / quick tuning is really interesting to me for experimenting with different sounds or changing tunings on the fly. If it's decent enough I might actually be able to save some room by getting rid of some of the lower end guitars I have kept around just for the novelty of their setups - who knows. Like I asked above though, I'm not sure if this particular variax is really worth more than others in the line that do similar things.

Single humbucker, "mid gain Line 6" from the link.

I'm not seeing a $1000 guitar here. I'd guess much steeper discounts will be coming.

The electronics are the entire point. No (non Variax) guitar can do what this guitar can.

I agree. The electronics are what make this guitar a versatile beast. It was co-designed by the guitar player for Twelve Foot Ninja, Stevic McKay. Basically it can do multiple tunings, you know what, just go watch the explainer video on YouTube. Search something like "guitar Batman would play Stevic McKay variax"

With all that being said, this is very expensive, at $1k, for me. I love this guitar to bits but I'm proper poor for this.

One day lads, one day.

This is just one of those products where you think, "hmm that's interesting!" but never actually have an interest in owning. I'd love to play one... in a store and then go home.

Ibanez custom shop (j-shop) orders will cost more than a grand and most likely come with a bolt on neck. J-shop — and old (early 90s) ibanez in general — have some of the best necks ever produced for people who like access and speed.

I have had a Shuriken for over a year, though mine is the charcoal burst. I got it at a similar price. Plays fine. The shape isn't for everyone, but neither is an Exploer or Les Paul. There's some interesting functionality in the electronics of the Variax that make it worth it in some situations. I use a Line 6 Helix floor for my effects processing and a Headrush FRFR powered cab. I also have a Boss Katana and a Hartke HD50 for "regular" amps (also a bunch of other guitars and bases).. It's great for situations where you are limited on how much you can take with you. I can take my board, one guitar, and a small cabinet and do all the things I need to.

The Variax has 2 different setups. One with "regular" effects and amps, and one for Line 6 "rigs".

With a normal setup, you can program the guitar with a computer app to a bunch of different tunings, pickup configs, body styles, etc. The guitar controls the processing and you can use any amp or effects. It's great for sets with a bunch of different tunings and you never have to touch the pegs or worry about floppy low strings if you drop to low C.

With the Helix, I can program all the above changes in the effects patch on the Helix. This uses the special cable (basically Ethernet).

While not for everyone, it's a pretty cool thing. Is it worth a grand? Maybe, if you can use the functionality. Is a Les Paul worth 3+ grand? Not for years.
