Amazon just introduced the Paperwhite Signature in agave and denim. If you don't mind a non-black Kindle (it will likely be hidden by a cover, anyway), you can get for $139.99 vs 189.99. Trade in an old Kindle and get an extra 20% off plus Amazon gift card

Amazon will credit you right away with the 20% off and gift card credit. Just click on the link to submit your trade in and fill out the auto form. Once you put the new Kindle in your cart, you'll see the discounts. If they don't receive the old one within about a month, they'll charge your credit card back for the discount.
As much as I want a new Kindle to replace my 2016 Paperwhite, I feel like the user experience is the same and there's no real value in upgrading. I had this same issue with getting a new iPhone. There hasn't been any new innovations worth it for me since eSIM.
I was just looking to see if they had a model with the 3 things I want that my hand me down OG Paperwhite doesn't have - wireless charging, auto adjusting brightness, and waterproof. They are offering $25 for my paperwhite so it goes from $189 to $114. Do I really need it? Of course not, but it's really tempting.

Edit: I misunderstood that it was 20% off plus a $25 GC. So it went from $189 to $87. I had to pull the trigger. Thanks OP!

Here's the important thing about the new Paperwhite models:

• With our signature 300 ppi display...
• Now with longer battery life - Get up to 10 weeks of battery life with a single charge via USB-C or compatible Qi wireless charger (sold separately).

USB-C and 300ppi display is necessary to be any good.

And I didn't know there was a wireless one now!

Anyone know if this paperwhite is any faster than the last model? That's my biggest gripe about the paperwhite - it's so laggy when you click through the library, etc

$139 - 20% - $5 (for my 2015 paperwhite) = 106.20. Meh. Not really enough changes to make it worth it.

Wish it had physical buttons (and not having to pay a fortune to get them in their higher models).

Good deal, thanks! The agave green and denim blue non-signature version is also on sale, 16 GB and$109.

I went with this one, as I don't think I'll use the wireless charging. The other Signature upgrades are more minor ( auto- brightness, 32GB)

My 2015 Paperwhite is still just as good as new. Had one before that was great for years and did the same type of deal to get my current on.

I also have the Amazon Premium Leather cover, which I really love. The new leather covers are not the same.

These kindles just seem to last.

Wish they made this for the new kindles.

Limited Edition Premium Leather Cover for Kindle Paperwhite - fits all Paperwhite generations prior to 2018 (Will not fit All-new Paperwhite 10th generation) https://a.co/d/8VfIj8x

So annoying I have to send the kindle in before I get the extra 20% off. If I could get the discount and have a window to send the kindle in while receiving the new one, I would do this immediately.

FYI, I have the PW5 kids edition and there isn't an auto brightness. Is that a feature of the signature only?

--edit--

It's only in the signature edition and it doesn't sound like it works very well:
