Massive clearance on all Spax screws and lag bolts. According to the associate there was a company buyout and Home Depot is changing their stock.
All of the $60 boxes were 15 and all of the $15-20 boxes were $3-5; also all of the expensive Lag Bolts ($3-5) were down to 30 to 80 cents.

How are SPAX screws compared to GRK? Been using GRK and they seem like high quality.

They are terrible, I bought two boxes of these awhile ago into brand new plywood and pine 2x4 half of them wouldn't drive, I had to predrill 100s of holes. Grk not a single problem.

GRK are good too. My local stores don't carry too many but maybe now they will but the ones i've used have been great.

IMO, they work really well. When you screw them in, they almost always instantly "catch" the wood fibers and immediately start screwing in. I never have an issue with the screws walking or breaking either. I think they screw in just a hair better than GRK's, but the difference is so minor and could just be my imagination..

However, I hate that Spax uses torx t20 bits. I swear those size bits last like half the life of the bigger t25 bits which GRK uses. But that's a minor gripe for a really good screw. I'd still pick up a bunch of boxes, if they are on clearance. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I completely dislike spax. can't comment on their specs as they don't publish any, or didn't when I messed with them. heads stripped easily with provided bit. drove terrible. split all types of wood I tried, needed pre drill.

don't remotely compare with grk. everything negative I said about spax is what grk does great. with that said, if I don't need any specific load qualities I have a a few hundred pounds of deck plus, or whatever lowes carries, screws from previous deals that were pennies on the dollar, and have almost exclusively gone to them, but I do pre drill everything with them. I also don't put any fastener in shear.

I imagine the spax screws will compete within 25% of the deck screws and grk, if you have luck with them driving/ not stripping out, etc.

My Home Depot (FL) had stacks however they were only discounted roughly $1 off retail. No deal here, yet.

My personal experience was that I have broken a few 3 inch spax screws out of a 100pk, but I have never broken any GRK screws out of the thousands I've driven with an impact driver. I switched from spax to GRK because I was not happy with them.

Went to my local HD and got a few mix and match boxes of stuff. Looks like 70% off. Not much of anything left but lags.

I built two fence gates last year. I used spax on one, ran out, and then bought GRK to build the other. Spax gate currently has about 25% of the screws broken. On GRK gate, 0%.

Though if you want the absolute WORST screw, try Deckmate screws. Sweet Jesus they are terrible. used them on a fence and 80% of the screws broke in a year. Replaced them all with GRK screws and zero have broke (been about 2 years).

Weird, they did this clearance at my HD over a year ago, replaced them all with GRK. I assumed Lowe's bought an exclusivity deal. Still have a few lags left.

Personal experiences seem to be all over the place in this thread. LMAO

I built my entire 539sq ft deck with deckmate screws and not a single issue except one had a boogered head that was unusable. 3 years later, still holding up fine. Deck screws are what I use for anything requiring 3" or more screws. My spax are either 1 1/4, 2 or 2 1/2. GRK, same as spax.

Never heard of these until I rebuilt my backyard fence 2 years ago. Went through two boxes. Impressed. But now I see other say GRK is better. Will have to check those out.

The #6 screws use a different size bit compared to the #8 and #10 screws.

SPAX gets my vote with good experiences. No pre-drilling and no wood splitting. I've been using them fro 6-9 months.

They're not GRK but I found them to be close / comparable. The torx drive and self tapping alone makes this a deal if you can find it.

But yes, I would much rather drive GRK any day.
